Hi,

I recently bought Samurai X: Complete Collection. (White Box) with 5 DVDs from Amazon Canada. I am disappointed with the packaging. The 5 disks came in thin sleeves instead of the usual DVD covers. They also do not come with inserts and brochurs. For the price of C$130, I would expect better packaging. The image and sound quality of the DVDs are better than excellent.

Now, I'm looking at collecting the TV series and I'm wary of region 1 boxsets. From photos shown on the web, I don't like the packaging of both the economy and premium boxsets.

I once saw region 4 boxsets on ebay and I really liked that packaging, however, I read somewhere there is an error on one of the disks for region 4. I am not sure if this problem has been corrected or if it was just a rumour. If you own a region 4 Rurouni Kenshin boxset, can you help clarify this rumour?

I am reluctant to import region 4 boxsets but I'm really uneasy with the packaging of region 1 sets. If you own the region 1 economy boxsets please also let me know if you are happy with it.

Thanks

I own the economy boxset of Kenshin season 1 and 2. Personally I am happy with my purchase because of how the dvds don't get scratch up like the premium bento boxset dvd have been know to. The only thing I have against the dvds are that these dvds look like they are from the early to late 90s. Media Blaster didn't really didn't add in new trailer or anything like that, but for the price you can't go wrong.

Thanks.

I've checked on the error reports on region 4 sets. There has been a string of errors reported of which some are fixed while minor glitches won't be fixed. I think my best option is to go with the Region 1 economy box sets. I cannot accept the way the disks are packed in the premium sets.

I missed the thread in this forum that discusses the same packaging problems of region 1 boxsets but after reading that thread, I still have no clue as to how region 1 economy sets pack the disks although I know it is a single case with flip pages that hold the disks. 1 "flip page" should only contain 2 disks -- 1 disk on each side. The disks should not be packed such that they overlap each other on the same side of a "page". Two disks, one on each side of a page is acceptable. It seems like this discussion does not matter because I have no choice but to accept the Region 1 economy sets!.

I come from South East Asia, region 3 boxsets are options for me but thus far, I have not been able to find online sources (vendors) selling original Region 3 Kenshin boxsets.

I own the economy boxes. They are not the most pretty boxes, but I'm really glad that I own the serie!
Perhaps my post will be to late or something, but here are some pictures...

Thanks for those pics, they're really helpful.

I couldn't find pics of anything but the front view online, so this was pretty great.

Thanks for the pics. I could not find pictures on the web showing detailed packaging of the economy boxset. I now know what to expect.

I cannot complain because importing region 3 and 4 disks will be too expensive due to shipping cost and import taxes. The economy set is my best option. I'm envious of region 4, the packaging looks really good.

Just a quick question. What is the quality like for the season 2 boxset, I don't want to splash a lot of money for the japanese box set just for one arc. Is the quality decent or is it grainy for example?

Thanks

The video quality is quite good. Ofcourse now and then the quality is a bit less, but overall I'd give it a 7.5/10

Here are some pics I took of the 2nd season with my camera while freezing the picture. Just to give you an idea yourself of the video quality (I couldn't do it in another way, sorry)

I think that will do, The Japanese DVD was tempting but I may as well just buy the part I want rather than the whole thing.

Thanks for the screens.

Those screen-shots are horrendous. Did you stretch the video to 16:9? Also, whenever you post DVD screen-shots you should leave the video in its native resolution (720x480 in this case since RK was made infullscreen). And, nwoo_2002, if you want info on the video quality of the discs, I'd suggest you check out AnimeOnDVD (reviews section).

Yes, mwoo_2002. The entire Kenshin collection with OVAs is expensive no matter which region code you buy. I've checked. I may not like the packaging of the region 1 sets but I have no choice. I pay Amazon prices out of bootleg paranoai and spread the purchase over 4 months, each month for 1 box. I have to forgo watching other titles while I complete this collection. I can understand why you would choose to purchase only part you want.

I trust the image quality of region 1 disks. The URL http://animeondvd.com is very informative but nobody has written any commentary for RK boxsets.

Hey, back off will you! I said I couldn't do it in any other way!! I can't help it that my tv doesn't agree with the resolution aspect of the dvd's. I simply can't fit it like you explained (commanded me??) . I'm sorry, but I'm really p* off by the way you commented me! I was just trying to help someone! FGS!

The box sets are basically the single discs repackaged. Assuming Media Blasters didn't do anything to the video authoring, the video quality should be fairly good. However, do take note that Japan has released a 10th anniversary edition box set of the whole series and then some, which you can read about here.

I'm not sure if it was remastered or just packaged together, but if it is remastered, that creates the possibility of MB possibly re-releasing the series at some point (doubtful, but you never know).

I don't have the DVDs anymore, but I have a friend that does, and I'll try to post actual screencaps to give a better representation of the series. Overall, it's not that bad. It's a little grainy, but I think that's just from the fact that this series came out in '97. I don't remember any problems with coloration or anything like that, though.

I have my discs handy, so here are some screencaps I grabbed with PowerDVD. These are all from the second season. I have the R1 "premium" Bento box sets, but I am assuming the quality of the video is the same across the different releases.

I just sort of grabbed these at random, so there's no rhyme or reason to them except that I tried to find some different kinds of scenes to give a variety. I have to say that I think the actual video looks better than these screencaps demonstrate, but hopefully this will give you an idea of what to expect.
