Hi guys! I'm new here, so I would like to apologize in advance if I commit any mistakes. I like reading anime forums but I usually don't join because I don't feel like I know enough about anime and I don't think I really have good insights about is as well. I haven't seen that many shows also, but I love watching anime nonetheless.
Enough about introduction. Two days ago my brother and I were talking about anime and he told me that he didn't like Fairy Tail even though he hasn't seen it yet. I asked him why and he told me that the show wasn't very unique, it was just a combination of elements from other more popular shows, and it came out way too late. I didn't know how to respond to this, because I enjoy Fairy Tail, yet I can't answer this question. What makes Fairy Tail different from other anime of its genre? |

It's difficult to go into any detail, but I can say that Fairy Tail doesn't have anything original about it. It's very shounen. The "magic" in Fairy Tail just tends to be more like your typical shounen superpowers. The main character is a very typical bland shounen lead, just like Ichigo (Bleach) and Luffy (One Piece).
I like Fairy Tail. I don't care even if the anime isn't original at all. Every anime still gives a different feel, and Fairy Tail is no exception. If a person doesn't like shounen, I can't see that person like Fairy Tail and the otherway around. |

That's what I thought so as well. I'm not looking for a complicated plot, or a sobfest, or something horrifying. I like Fairy Tail because like other shows, it's filled with action scenes and the main character has this hidden strength and I like that about shonen anime.

Fairy tail doesn't really differ from other animes its shounen you either like it or not, thats your own personal taste right? I like it becoz it so shounen-ish
"oooo i will never give up!" ooo random power-up ;p *beats the crap out of villian* VICTORY ! ;p its just simple it doesn't have a complicated plot like Stein gate its just entertainment ( dont get me wrong most anime is entertaiming ). |

I guess that's that. I'll just give up on arguing with my brother and enjoy watching the anime.
How far is the anime from the manga? I'm thinking of reading starting now, but if I do that I won't be able to watch anymore. Is it better to wait or to start reading? |

I like watching anime because i'm a lazy person ;p that and i dont have the right mind-set to "feel" the emotion from pages i have to see and hear it to feel that emotion =). btw english is my second language sorry for any errors |

Well I also could not wait for the anime to finish, as I started watching Fairy Tail like 2 months ago and finished all 70+ episodes in a week lol. The manga is one arc ahead of the anime. What I like about Fairy tail is it is funny. Rarely do you have a main character in a shonen being the weakest in a group. I consider Lucy the main main character. It also has some badass characters, Erza ftw.

I think I'll go with reading the manga. And then I'll watch the anime. It's not so bad, seeing this show over and over. Thanks for the help everyone.

Personally I like Fairy Tail, yeah its more genaric long running shonen, but its GOOD genaric long running shonen. Hiro Mashima knows how to make fun series (which can also be seen in his other works like Rave Master & Monster Hunter Orage)
Its nothing special, but its a solid series, and worth checking out if you just want good ol fashioned shonen action/adventure. As for the characters Yeah they all fit typical shonen cliches, but their still fun (My favorite character is Erza Scarlet.) |

No its OK. Should've joined earlier. Many newcomers like you join and don't know squat either. Anyway, most likely your brother saw Rave Master. When he looked at Fairy Tail, he said, "Not this again  . " Welcome to anime lol. Your bro has only begun to realize what anime really is and you will too. Sounds like you have already though.
Fairy Tail isn't a bad anime, but it's not a good one either. It's just, hmm how should I put it, it gets the job done. Most importantly both sides are satisfied. The buyers and the sellers. The bond doesn't go beyond that which is why Fairy Tail is not good. It's OK if you don't get what I mean. Basically, Fairy Tail is an anime that you condition yourself to watch. Kinda similar to how radio stations are able to play literally the same garbage for 24hrs straight and not get much backlash. Pretty sure you heard of "there is nothing good on the radio", yet sometimes you still listen to it. Well that is what Fairy Tail, Bleach, and all those other redundant series are like. Don't know about here, but the common opinion of Fairy Tail is that it's mediocre at best. It gets the basic stuff down, but it doesn't go beyond that in order to make it groundbreaking (like Naruto did when first released). Fairy Tail has potential, but for marketing reasons most likely, Fairy Tail is kept at a mediocre level. Dumbing down stuff seems to sell. Ironically, the manga version of Fairy Tail is well renowned. I guess it's just one of those cases where certain books don't make good shows. |

He actually said that. But he watched Naruto and Bleach. He said Fairy Tail was just a combination of the two, plus some other shonen anime. Not exactly unique.
He's probably looking for something spectacular, but I don't mind that Fairy Tail doesn't get an excellent rating. It still is entertaining, in my opinion. And when it comes to shonen anime, that's basically just what I want. I started reading the manga, and since the anime seems to follow it faithfully, you wouldn't think there'll be a difference of opinion. Guess that's what you get when you add animation to a static page. Like I said, I should probably just stop arguing with my brother because we clearly have different tastes. Thanks a lot, ShinobiX.

I don't really like the word generic with Fairy Tail, yeah I guess you might say it is nothing new, but for example I have never had the want to buy the dvds of Naruto or Bleach, but I look forward to getting Fairy Tail.
I guess I find Naruto (the character) and Ichigo to be rather anoying, whether making Naruto an idiot for an excuse to explain everything simply, or Ichigo being the unwavering grumpy puss so he is dedicated. You could say that Natsu and Gray kind of fit those sort of characteristics, but Natsu can actually be funny, and Gray knows how to relax. Best of all think characters have chemistry, they can be entertaining even if not in a fight, case in point the High School episode. |

I agree about Ichigo. He can be really stupid sometimes. He's fought countless fights yet he still can't figure out that all he needs is a strong resolve, or something. Fairy Tail characters on the other hand are pretty unique. Natsu cannot handle transportation, Gray randomly strips off, and Erza is just, well, awesome.

Well Natsu can be stupid at times, but that his charm, it is not just used to explain something (which some series do it over and over again), no Natsu will charge in even if that will cause him bodily harm. Except when it involves Erza, the only thing he is afraid of (other than transport) I like how Erza is one of the strongest most moral people in the show, but she still knows how to scare others.
If the show ever needs to explain something it will either be for or by Lucy, who is generally pretty inteligence, and if Natsu doesn't understand, he just doesn't care or follows his guts. Loved some of Natsu fights like the time he freaked out that guy with the barriers by putting his head in it, or a lot of the Cobra fight. |

Natsu reminds me of Luffy from One Piece. They're both thickheaded and never think when it comes to battle, but they know when to step up and just kick someone's ass especially when said opponent tramples all over something they, or their friends, care about. They both focus on the strength of friendship and bonds and justice and something along those lines. I don't know why, I like that idea.
