okay, i was just wondering, but does anyone know where this whole NOSEBLEED thing came from? Is there anyone that actually has a nosebleeds when looking at pretty girls? Is it one of those things that were derived from nothing (such as the sneezing when some1 talks about you).

The nosebleeds in anime are derived from a Japanese old wives' tale, that says that becoming sexually excited causes nosebleeds. This never happens in real life, though. It's just Japanese slapstick.

Wikipedia, my friend, Wikipedia.
| Quote: | | In anime and manga (Japanese-originating animation style), it is very common to see sexually/romantically-aroused characters suffering nosebleeds, sometimes intense ones. Sometimes referred as the Japanese Slapstick, this rarely occurs in real life, but is based on a Japanese "old wives' tale", which states that becoming sexually excited can cause nosebleeds. Such occurrences are generally played for laughs and signify "loserhood" and/or virginity. This conception regarding nosebleeds also exists in Chinese culture. |
EDIT: Saishu_Heiki_Kanojo beat me to it ... darn.

Yesturday during my anime club meeting while the president was talking her friend showed her a picture in a yaoi manga and she got a nosebleed. So I was thinking has there ever been any female characters in yaoi that get nosebleeds?

There aren't really a lot of female characters in most yaoi shows...
I can't recall a single instance where I have seen a women get a nosebleed in anime period, yaoi or otherwise.

Karin, the anime. Karin is a vampire who gives blood instead of sucks blood. But it was so perfectly portrayed as a parody of the whole male nosebleed thing because Karin is so head over heels for a guy that she actually imagines perverted thoughts with him. Besides the fact that becoming emotional is one of the things that causes her body to overproduce blood and literally when it rains it pours (blood).

It's not yaoi, but I seem to remember that being a common occurence for the female lead in the Wallflower manga.

I heard that people get nosebleeds when it's too hot.. It's like blood rushes to you head or something..
In anime, we usually see them ecchi boys getting nosebleeds when they're aroused.. or when it gets too "hot to handle".. get it?
Well that's what I think

ah, thanks for explaining that. I never really understood it either...I just figured it was a way to stress the emotional arousal of a person. It's cool that it comes from a wives tale.

You obviously haven't read or seen the anime version of The Wallflower.
I heard that the old wives tale originated from the fact that when an erection happens, all the blood starts rushing to.. "down below", therefore some of it kind of 'spills' as it were, out the nose. In any case Im defonatly certain I heard somewhere that it was related to the blood required for an erection.
In which case having a female character (Which Iv seen lots of, actually) get a nosebleed from being aroused makes little to no sence, so it is used to be all the more ridicules and silly.

I think I may have worded my question word. I ment our president actually got a nosebleed when she saw the picture of the half naked guy in the manga. She actually had to leave the meeting and go to the bathroom. So I wanted to know if in yaoi manga females get nosebleeds and it is a normal thing like guys or was it just completly random thing that happened?

Id say it was probably completly random. Theres no real scientific or medical linking between arousal and nosebleeds. (Correct me if Im wrong)

Sunako gets nosebleeds whenever she sees a "'beautiful" person. =/ Personally I find the whole nosebleed thing annoying and unrealistic. Good thing very few anime/manga I watch/read has it. I can only think of two. The wallflower and Karin. But in Karin it happens for a different reason. Not the one you would think.

Saying that Karin's nosebleeds are due to sexual arousal is a clear misunderstanding of the story line. She bleeds because she's a blood-making vampire, not because she's your standard slapstick-pervert. It always revolves around the guy she likes because his blood is her "type" and her blood inside of her reacts, and therefore starts to seep from her nose.
