Hmmm. I'm wondering. How come this option isn't turned on around here?
[EDIT: Added a poll for the poll. I voted 'no.' -TK]

Because their probably be people creating polls for who cuter and which show is better all the time. And lets face it most of those poll don't really spark discussion which what the forums are for. Most of the time the polls compare two things that aren't really comparable.

On a site like this, it would be best not to have polls that the users could make up. It would end up spamming the forums, especially if new people not committed to the type of posting we do here have a chance to create their own polls. On top of that, a lot of the same subject would pop up, and people would spam to get more posts as well.

Like oh my God who iz da better ninja....Naruto or Sasuke?!?!?! That's the kind of threads we'd get. Not all of them, but more then likely the majority. Plus polls often when comparing series or someone from them is just an open door to lead to flames and you don't know what you're talking about insults. I'm happy without them unless it's something important. Like if the staff had a pole for some sort of upgrade to the site and would we prefer a silver background, or light blue. Something functional, not mindless.

No matter which option you have chosen, by participating this poll you have shown your recognition that having a poll like this one has its functions. Furthermore, the result of this poll is not statistically valid due to sample bias -- only people who are interested in this issue, especially those who want to obtain this ability to start polls, would make a vote here. Furthermore, there are always people who think "hey i can open polls at this-and-that website so why can't i do it here?" Consequently, yeas will always outnumber nays in such a poll.
I refuse to vote this time.

Background colors? You called that important?
Important matters are like whether ANN should charge instead of ads or whether users should have different ranks and clearances.

Isn't irony great?
However, it would appear only mods and admin. have the ability pull such a thing (I think). So if that's the case, then it doesn't really matter what others think until they run it by us .
Perhaps it will be something to consider one of these days, given of course the person presenting such a topic can compliment it with a decent grammatical backing (i.e. not just a simple question and a one-liner comment to set precedence for the entire thread; we need details, people!).

I have to agree with dormcat. This poll puts the user into a situation of whether polls should exist at all, not whether everybody should have the ability to make them. I can't vote either.

Well I just cast my vote as a no which brings it to a dead even 8-8. So far it hasn't been a clear example of yeas outnumbering nays. I still think unless it's a poll involving some part of ANN the site and what to do with it/add to it etc. I would not allow them.

Those were just minor examples dormcat. Obviously issues like should ANN charge memberships instead of ads, or how to add more/any video content are big issues. That's just common sense.

I guess I'm one of the only ones who is vocally for them. Personally, I like the instant feedback/visual summary of opinions that a simple poll provides. It's a pain in the butt to read through an entire thread and try to figure out how popular a given idea is. The other nice thing is that there are a lot of lurkers at ANN, many/most of them do not post in the forums frequently like some regulars do. It's pretty obvious what the differing opinions are just from this thread. If one only reads the posts, they would think it was a landslide victory for "no" however, the fact that there are 9 " yes" and 8 "no" with 2 seemingly additional moral votes for "no" tells quite a different story.
On the other hand.... I can only think of a handful of potentially good poll ideas off the top of my head, and I can think of thousands that I know I'd be locking on sight.

I voted yes. I think polls should be allowed for a trial period of time (like a month or so) to see if people are able to use them with discretion. I'm sure there will be the occasional WHO IS STRONGER??? poll or polls that say "Are you a poll whore?" with only "YES!!!" as an option like I've seen on a certain forum that attracts only the biggest idiots of the online anime community, but no one can say for certain that ANN's forum community is dumb enough to do that en masse without us actually having the ability to vote in and create polls.

Like that cursed Sub-Dub thread. I for one could only assume what the general consensus is regarding that topic. Like hell, I'd skim a thread just to do a simple count.
Now, if there is a space, server resource issue, then obviously forget it.

Well, I might just consider doing that sometime. Whenever I do come around anyways.

Yes. Threads like those... ugh.

Polls are similar to recommendation threads in that you can get ones that are well thought out and useful and actually add to the forum quite well. The bulk of the ones you get however are thoughtless eyesores that add nothing and only waste space.

Perhaps we could allow poll requests. Members could begin a thread, and PM a moderator requesting that the thread be turned into a poll. It would then be up to the moderator to decide...
What do you think Keonyn, Selenta, Tony?

I still say if it's not site related don't have them. But, if we were to have them I would highly recommend using Tempest's idea. This way at least all the "crap" polls would be weeded out. The problem is this will create a lot more PM's for the mods and admins to sift through.

I like that idea, though I'm not so sure the mods will want the extra work.
