How is it? I guess I'm asking how did Funi do with the translations, has anything been redubbed ( I had heard that was the case at some points)..... basically, is it worth picking up if I already own the original DVD set?

I have an additional question in regards to the packaging. Is there supposed to be any kind of insert material? The case has a little flap on the inside cover like there's supposed to be a booklet or something, but mine is just empty.

Is it the episodes or the movies?

(I think the episodes could use some touch-ups)

It's the TV series. ADV still has the rights to the OVAs and Movies. I took a look at an episode in the Funi release and the CPM version to see if there were any differences, and there's not a whole lot changed. The English dub is the same Central Park Media dub, and the subtitles are only slightly changed. It's mainly timing changes and punctuation edits like "Hey! Can you help me out here?" becoming "Hey, can you help me out here?" Funi did not make the subtitles "Funimation-style," "Miss Lina" is still "Miss Lina," not "Lina-san" as you would expect from Funimation. For the songs, Funi removed the romaji lyrics that displayed parallel to the English lyrics in the CPM version, and did away with all hardsubs that were on some of the early episodes. Funi's alternate angles are also at work to display the original series logo and episode titles, as well as CPM's VHS-era overlays. The video looks decent for a 10-year-old pre-digital anime, at least better than the CPM DVDs. (As far as I can tell. I don't actually own the CPM version Embarassed )

Since the first question was answered I'll grab the second one. There is a sleeve for an insert but the only thing that was suppose to be there was the FUNimation insert that shows upcoming shows. Something happened during the packing and they were left out.

Ok.. ok.. I guess I should ask, Is it one of those weird economy boxes, like the case with all 6 (assuming there's 6) discs in it?

I hear it's remastered. It's not cropped, is it? I saw about 8 episodes 2 years ago and liked where it was going, but never got to finish it. I wouldn't mind getting it someday if it's been reworked to decent standards.

It hasn't been remastered. It looks better than the original sets, but they didn't remaster anything they just authored the discs better or something.

Also, despite what was initially claimed, there are no new dubbed lines.

Yeah, from what I understand, there are no Region 2 remastered materials availible. So Funi couldn't follow up on their "remastered" claim since they only had the original video to begin with.

And it's still on just 4 discs, just like the CPM version. I thought they'd at least go to 5 discs to cut down the episodes per disc ratio and achieve better quality, but no such luck. And I can't say I'm crying about the lack of the "Upcoming" insert, either.

Re-authoring and/or re-encoding can be far more important than a re-mastering anyway, at least in my opinion. Almost no companies encode DVDs decently, with everyone making different sorts of mistakes. Especially with pre-digital anime, the DVD encoding process seems extra prone to problems, I don't know why. Almost all pre-digital anime, after being encoded to DVD, have motion-blurring problems where you see a slight double-image 2 out of every 5 frames, I don't know why it shouldn't be like that. This is NOT the same motion-blurring problem that affects ALL anime (especially those encoded poorly) that causes very subtle after-images to trail moving objects at all times. This general after-image problem exists also on pre-digital anime too, though...so it's a double whammy effect.

The worst example I've ever seen is the Ranma movies...Big Trouble in Nekonron China and Nihao My Concubine. At times there can be quadruple after-images because the analog double-image problem adds up with the general after-image problem and you get ridiculous quantities of after-images which can be visible from up to 4 frames in the past....

Other artifacts which affect only pre-digital animes which I think are the result of the DVD encoding process somehow include: 1) random loss-of-detail (black lines can randomly disappear sometimes) problems introduced by digital noise reduction processing...made famous in the Dragonball Z Widescreen Re-release DVD box sets where it's an obvious problem...but in actuality is active on many pre-digital anime, usually to a less aggressive extent, 2) problems with cross-coloration, dot crawl, and other composite-video related problems in most cases...hidden by the fact that almost all pre-digital anime is pre-processed by fairly good 3D Y/C comb filters before being encoded, but comb filters are far from perfect, 3) everytime the scene changes there are crazy white/black static horizontal lines appearing at the top or bottom of the screen...not sure what causes this phenomena but I only see it on DVDs of pre-digital anime...a lot of people complain about this too.

So if you're a fan who like me has all the old tv sets and movie and OVAs there's really not enough new to warrant another purchase is there? Short of being a perfectionist and wanting the collection to be complete, or if you're just a die-hard Slayers fan. If Funi had re-dubbed it I was planning on getting it but now that I know they haven't, plus it's not even remastered, I'm guessing this is more for those who don't already have the whole series.

There are really only three reasons to get this set:

1) slightly better video quality
2) fixed chapter stops (apparently the first sets had issues with that) and
3) you never bough it the first time (the reason I'm getting it at some point)

Hmm... sounds like the only reason I'd get it is for the slimmer cases. Not worth it.
