I was looking for some manga today and this question came to mind. How come the manga market in other countries seems bigger than the US market? Question Question Question
I mean, the Spanish, french or Italian manga market has more releases translated in their languages, and those three countries thogether doesnt make the population of the US.

So if anyone can claify or explain this, I'll would like to know why.

thanks

Rolando

I think it has to do with how people view comics. Just look at France, it has a big comic industry of its own and comics have a cultural value there. Artists and publishers don't shy away from mature titles and thus the comic industry as a whole has a very large target audience. In the US however, comics are considered more of a hobby for children, teens and the occasional geek. You could say that comics (and manga as well) have an image problem in the US.

That sounds about right. Hopefully though, with the latest comic movies that have been coming out recently, 30 Days of Night being one of very mature content, American audiences will begin to get more involved in US graphic novels; and from there interest in the manga market should go up a bit more.

I think it probably has more to do with the age of the US manga market than anything. While manga has been readily available in the US for over 20 years now, there really wasn't a very big market for it until Tokyopop caught fire with the $10 GN format about 5 years ago. Since then, the number of titles has exploded but we still have a ways to go to catch up to more developed markets in Europe that have been translating the stuff in a larger volume for a longer time period.
