I was wondering if you could clear up the interpretation of a gesture. I have noticed it in the love hina volumes I am currently reading and believe I have got the context right. It's when the tongue is stuck out and lower eye lid pulled down on one eye. I believe it seems to imply "kidding" or "joke" but thought I'd double cheak as I didn't want to get the wrong impression. While I'm at it does anyone know of any other glossary that might help. Looked in the lexicon here which has most things I want to know but are there any others that might be usefull

I always thought that it wasn't really a kidding gesture, but more of something you do when you're mad or annoyed at someone. One example is when your sibling is bothering you and when they aren't looking, you stick your tongue out. (Not that I do. I've just seen people doing it. Wink) Of course I'm probably wrong....

I think its some kind of showing dis-respect in a kid sort of way (to not offend the other person - sort of a joke).

It's a taunt, but don't necessarily carry ill intent. It's something you might do when your brother tells you not to do something, but you do it anyway where he can't do anything to you (at the moment), and you let this fly when no one's looking to let him know what you think of him and his power over you.

So yeah, it's basically just a form of disrespect, but I'd hardly call it earth-shattering. Of course, the level of disrespect varies depending on who you're disrespecting, but all the same....

That's "akkan-be".
Arkard is right. It's a kid's way of showing disrespect or dislike. I think all the Japanese kids do it at one point or another...I remember doing it myself.

But when an adult does it, it makes that person look immature. Or it can be interpreted as a teasing gesture among friends.
