Something has been driving me crazy lately. Everytime I mention anime to someone, they assume that I'm talking about some sort of hentai thing that I'm mildly interested in. My friends have done this to me on numerous occasions, and I always want to explain to them that I watch shows with actual characters that I connect with and stories that are meaningful, but they never listen. Store clerks always say "Anime is hot" whenever my brother and I go out to buy stuff. It's just ridiculous, not all anime's like that.
Anyone else have this problem?

You're correct about anime being more than porn, and all of the regular readers of ANN know that because we are anime fans. But the masses out there are largely ignorant of anime. The more enlightened among the masses may have vaguely heard the term anime but mistakenly think it's all kiddie fare like Pokemon or it's all animated porn.
Sad thing is that most anime-ignorant people aren't interested enough in the subject of anime to be corrected. So you'll just have to put up with the fact that most people in the USA don't know what anime is all about, or think they know what it is but are wrong. They are the fools, not you. Don't let them get under your skin. (^_*)

If this perception exists we only have ourselves to blame. At my local anime store I've watched as over the past year their hentai collection has grown from a few random titles to now take up about half the shelfspace. What bothers me most is that all their anime is put in the same place. If I were a parent (which I'm not) would I let my kid look through that section? Of course not! So when the average person walks by such a collection and sees countless boxes partially obstructed by tape posted with statements like "ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR CHILDREN" what are they supposed to think. Why do I say that this is our fault? Simply this, the store is doing nothing other than following the money. Clearly that is what people are buying and my store, well-managed business that it is, provides what the populace wants.

Gees all anime is not porno, since when is that news. Most stores I hit prefer to sell only the general stuff I have to really look to find anything nasty even at FRY's where the ratio is about 10 to 15 nice to 1 for even just r-rated stuff. There's this one shop in Orange, CA I go to and even though they have a massive selection it's all at the most PG-13, TV series or OVA's thou they'll have something like Perfect Blue on the same shelf. But now as I write this I realize that Iam usually so overwhemed by their selection I don't even notice what they have that could be heavy-duty. Iam usual to busy to even notice that or care or chatting with the other customers and the clerks. Next time Iam there I'll ask for some H and watch thier reaction, could be fun.

I know the problem, but who cares. I think they are just playing around, so as long as you don't react to it and just go along, they'll quit eventually. At least that was the case with me.
I even got one of those former prankers to watch anime (not H), and he likes it

I hear this all the time. A lot of people see anime in either one of two extremes: either they think it's all for kids (pokemon, digimon etc.) or they think it's all porn (insert porn title here).
I especially think the internet can do anime a disservice. Has anybody here tried to search "anime" on the internet? You'll get nothing in return but porn sites and hentai sites--that's a very negative first impression for a person wanting to learn about anime in general.
Unfortunately, that's the reality we're in. A lot of people will be turned away by anime because of the false perceptions, and there'll be a few people who are open minded enough to know there is a lot more to anime than what the masses think.

Grrrrrr, my sister told my mom that all anime is, is porno cartoons, because she HEARD (didn't even see it) that Tenchi Muyo had nudity. Pisses me off when they assume things.

Well, Tenchi Muyo! does have nudity. But I wouldn't call it pornographic. After all, they were technically bathing.

Heh, didn't Fox do a news special on anime and why it's bad a few years back? I hated it when they did that. It's all stero-types anyway, so it doesn't get to me that much.

Well yes I know it does have nudity, but to call it pornographic is going to far.

People think it's all porn or it's all kiddie stuff---cartoonies! One end of the spectrum or the other.
I was at Blockbuster and they put half their anime in the kids section. They were just stupid though. Anybody could tell Najica did NOT belong in the kids area.

At several video stores, the anime is either in the sci-fi section or in/near the porn section.

Where I live, anime is stuck between music and horror flicks. They don't really make any distinguishing marks at all between stuff like Wicked City (hentai), Perfect Blue (adult content), and stuff like Someday's Dreamers, .hack//SIGN, and DBZ.
Of course, the Barnes and Noble here is even worse. When you can pick up Battle Royale and Happy Mania alongside Naruto, something is definately wrong.
Then again...where I live, little kids can buy M-rated video games, R-rated movies (I can personally vouch for both), ect. I try to pass information to people whenever I can, but...well, I'm just one person.
