Hello everyone, this is my first post. Nice to meet you all. Anyway, I went to best buy and picked up my copy of the Evangelion director's cut DVD. Needless to say I was thrilled with the new animation. I would like to know if anyone (who has bought it already) has any thoughts regarding the bonus interview with the WETA people working on the NGE movie. I think the movie is coming along wonderfully, and I'm very excited about the production drawings I saw. However, certain things were displayed on the interview that are sure to anger the purists (just so you know, I am by no means in that category). The most obvious is Asuka's proposed name change (to "Kate Rose"), which actually made me laugh, although I was mildly disappointed. I guess "Asuka Soryu" would sound too weird for American theatergoers. Anyone else seen it yet? I'll be happy to hear some new opinions.

Shocked Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!
Crying or Very sad They're basardizing my fave character. Poor poor Asuka. US anime fans learned to say your name, why can't movie goers do so too? Crying or Very sad Poor Asuka, not to be accepted for who she is... >.> dammit, they really don't need to change her name. -_- But as long as I get to see the Evas, I will accept it. I want to see those Evas... Evas... Evas...

You can't change characters names! The rest of the world suffers through our American Cinema names, they can handle a few authentic Japanese ones. This does not bode well for the movie in the anime sector. NO!!! Evil or Very Mad

Kate Rose? So does that mean all the characters are going to be American (or English)?? People would probably mispronounce her name. Like saying "A-SOO-ka" instead of "A-ska" I remember playing GTA3 and that's how they pronounced the female Yakuza's name. I would yell at the TV screen for their ignorance. Foolish mortals. Rolling Eyes
Ah well...as long as I get to see those wonderful EVAs in action! Very Happy

I still don't think it will ever get out of preproduction unless an actual studio signs on board. The production drawings and the demo reels from WETA are to show studio executives to get them to greenlight this thing. A lot of movies get much further along in preproduction but never get made.

Personally, the name change doesn't bother me. "Kate Rose" sounds like a good name, if you ask me, and like Mou Kaoru said, people would just screwup Asuka's name anyway just trying to pronounce it.

It's not like they're giving her some completely moronic or otherwise uncharacteristic name, a la Speed Racer, Ash Ketchum, Madison...whatever her last name was in Cardcaptors, etc. It's a natural sounding and rather fitting name (in other words, I can actually picture a red-haired, fiery-tempered EVA pilot being named Kate, whereas I just can't see a modest Japanese schoolgirl being named Madison).

Something tells me this "Americanization" won't wash over the entire cast. I get the feeling Shinji will still be named Shinji, Rei will still be Rei, and Misato will probably still be Misato. Kaji and Ritsuko's names might be changed, though.

I think we can all blame Shakespeare for matching up firey-tempered with the name Kate... Wink

Hmm... I can see people having problems with Misato just as much as the rest.

Of all the possible changes, I know Kaji will be changed, and honestly it will not change much with him, same goes to Ritsuko. Their ethnic identity isn't important to their character, even Asuka could be changed. I honestly feel she is the one character, besides Shinji, who should not be Americanized. It leaves much more of a world feeling if the cast is diverse, if only supposedly.

Well, assuming they have any interest in keeping the psychology intact, I think it is important as well that they are 'seperated' by name/background. It was an important aspect of Eva that none of the characters were comfortable/close to eachother, and I can't see that being developed in a short movie without some solutions like Asuka being from someplace else.

It wasn't really a big deal that Asuka, in particular, was from Germany, but it helped her to make the barrier between herself and everyone else.

True, the Live movie will have to be viewed as something completely seperate for NGE, regardless. But, I think staying true to the characters is the only way that it can be pulled off.

"Kate Rose"? Wasn't that the name of the Titanic girl? =/

I haven't been following the movie production much since I haven't been a fan of the idea since the get-go. Though I was sure I read somewhere that it was a project being shared together with three or four countries. Is this going to end up as a mostly-American adaptation regardless?

Except for the involvement of Gainax and to a lesser extent Anno (from what I hear) this IS going to be an "American" movie. Who else would have the cash to finance such a project? And I hate to say it, but I'm fairly certain they will change nearly all (if not ALL) the characters names. This is NOT going to be a foreign film kids. Whatever Studio picks this up is going to want it to be accessible to everyone, not just die-hard fans.

Also I found this site to be fairly informative about events regarding the film.

Or how about "Ray":

Still hoping that's a typo.

Plus the fact the characters now look about 24. The ages were a critical part of the story. Teens in puberty are real easy to push over the edge into depression.

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! they left it in D&R and End of Eva, why not here!!! I think I just lost the last bit of hope this will turn out ok (I'm not a purist per se, but I still don't like the idea of changing the characters)

"People would probably mispronounce her name. Like saying "A-SOO-ka" "

I did that for the longest time... though you can't blame people, the spelling is what throws them off.

"Yes! The Evas! Thank god for the technology of today, we get to see real looking Evas! *checks again to see if she's a girl* >.> I don't know why I want to see the Eva's so badly"

LOL! because the originals looked amazing, now you can see them 3d rendered kicking more ass. I'm wondering if they do a summary of the series, will they include the scene where the dummy plug is first used, and Shinji has to watch Toji get destroyed along with his Eva... mmmmmmm 3d bloodbath (I'm sure some people will be blowing chunks when they see this)

" "Kate Rose"? Wasn't that the name of the Titanic girl? "

I believe Rose was her first name, Kate is the first name of the actress, could be wrong though.

Hey, Anno said they should make it different. I don't care if they change Shinji Ikari to Buck Futter as long as they make a good movie.

Tenchi's right, though; they aren't really making the movie yet. They're just trying to generate enough interest in it to get investors and a studio signed on.
