I know I bashed it, because I thought it was low-brow-and still do-but I guess I was being a little bit elitist. (Plus my impression of the film was unfairly dimmed by the stupid projector people at BAAF, who would either cut it off or run it without sound.) So on second glance-and after reading a recent interveiw with Kon in Animerica which helped expand my understanding of his intent-I've decided that it's entertaining, but still not worthy of an Oscar like Millennium Actress. But at least Tokyo Godfathers is more accessable to otaku than Millennium Actress, even if the former film does lose some of the latter film's charm. So if Tokyo Godfathers does get nominated, I won't be as ashamed as I might've been in the past.

I thought Tokyo Godfathers was awesome, but I agree that it's not oscar-worthy like Millenium Actress, which was utterly perfect (and probably the best animated film I have ever seen).
I don't understand how you couldn't have at least found it entertaining. Do you not like feel-good movies? :( |

I don't mind if it's feel-good, as long as it's not forced. I didn't feel like the film was really resolved. It was really just them on a series of adventures, without enough character development. I'll probably see the original 3 Godfathers(well the John Ford one) for comparison's sake, whenever WB releases it on R1 dvd.

I've seen part of the original 3 Godfathers (the 1948 one at least... it seems this thing has been made into tons of different versions), and its really really sappy. I was almost puking with the level of sappyness in it... It was a relic of another time period a much more conservative and "cheery" one... probably would have been a good film if I was part of that culture though, it was kind of entertaining, just increadibly sappy....
I hope that doesn't mean Tokyo Godfathers will be the same way... |

This reason alone is why I will rarely, if ever see an anime that I haven't already seen elsewhere at a Con. They are NOT good places for seeing an anime for the first time, especially such a noteworthy film. |

Don't let my negative experiences overshadow interest in BAAF. It was a generally fun con, and those screenings occasionally raffle free swag. (I won an autographed Nasu film book and an Initial D coaster, cus I had the lucky tickets.)

Then it was worth it in the long run. As for Tokyo Godfathers, the only complaint I had was spoiler[how there was no resolution to the Spanish hitman subplot.] Other than that TG was a great film.

He wasn't Spanish. He was Latin American. There's a difference.
