Concerning the opening theme of 'Record of Lodoss War Chronicles of the Heroic Knight', I noticed that the footage shown in the opening sequence has several differences to the actual anime - character designs, events e.t.c. I accept that a lot of it was drawn specifically for the sequence but I understand that sections are supposed to be depicting the actual anime. Does anyone know where these extra extracts come from or any explanation as to their appearence? It's beginning to get on my nerves.
Thanks for whatever help you can offer.

In general the animation for the OPs/EDs is done by studios other than the ones that do the regular TV animation..
this leads to character design differences, either because of the difference in higher vs lower quality (ops/eds tend to be drawn by higher-quality studios), or because of the different models/sketches given to them.
If you're ever bored, buy a copy of "Captain Scarlet" sometime. It's one of the best 60s puppet-mation shows around. Mature AND high-quality, if you can get past the "Oh, they're just playing with puppets" phase. Captain Scarlet's ending credits are painted pictures of a man in "danger", such as crushed under a rock slide, reaching for a stick of dynamite that's about to go off. Sinking into water with a weight tied on his feet, etc... He goes through none of those events in the real show. Why? Because the artist was told to draw Captain Scarlet in various "dangerous" situations.. and so he did.
Another possibility is that the events in the opening are parts of the RoLW novels that had been skipped over. The series is fairly lengthy in Japan, and includes a number of "side-stories" by different authors, much like Dragonlance, if you're familiar with that.

The RLW tv series OP seq was most likely done by the senior animators and/or character designers themselves. These individual(s) typically do not work on the actual animation found in the tv series. They do however create the settei for the animation staff to use. Also they check for consistency by the animators and if needed, will draw additional character references. But IMO the character designs by Nobuteru Yuki for the OVAs, were vastly superior than the tv series. However it should be noted that OVAs have higher budgets enabling the creative talents certain advantages that tv series do not have.

Ah, oh well, thank you very much. I'm a little disappointed - the opening sequence looks more entertaining then the actual anime... thank you very much, anyway, but I'm a little upset. I think the character design on the opening sequence look better then in the actual anime.
I've seen 'Captain Scarlet' (regularly shown on BBC2), and I've seen the ending credits. Most unusual (since he never seems to be in those situations, bar the first spisode) but pretty acceptable none-the-less. I'm afraid I'm not a fan, nor do I really like it, but it's more mature then most puppet-mation shows.

Just keep this in mind, in general for most anime tv series the OP seq animation is typically better than the actual animation in the tv series. The attention to details, the consistency of designs and the animation is higher, than in the tv series itself. This is also why OP and END seq cels are worth so much more money to cel collectors. So try to remember this when someone shows you the first episode of a tv series, the OP is meant to look really good as it was most likely done by the senior animators or character designer themselves.
