Okay, so I'm going to this anime convention, MY FIRST EVER!!!
And I want to cosplay, even if it's done badly, after all we are not Japanese, we are North Americans...
Anyways, I just don't know who to cosplay as.
I am 5'1" and I have brown hair and blue eyes.
Can you think of any characters that look like that?

A bit more detail than 5'1" with brown hair and blue eyes is necessary.
First of all, it would be helpful to know gender.
Second, how long is your hair? Would you be willing to wear a wig? Dye your hair? Cut it?
Is there any particular genre you want to be from? How about type of show? Are you opposed to dressing as a character from a Shoujo series, or fanservice series, or fighting shounen series?
Do you wear glasses? Would you wear colored contacts?
Are you either especially muscular or overweight?
I'm also not entirely sure we are allowed to have this kind of thread, but I can't think of any rules which prohibit it, so I imagine you're all right.

Ah, sorry.
I'm a female.
My hair is past shoulder length.
I am cheap and unwilling to cut/dye my hair.
I am not muscular nor overweight. I am actually quite skinny.
No glasses, but I could wear fake ones.
I don't mind what genre but I would like it if I knew the anime or could watch the anime in a weeks time, you know, before the convention.

Well, do you have light brown hair or a darker shade, cause if its darker you can go as Diva from Blood+ if you've ever seen that show. Thats all I can think of atm, lol. Its the blue eyes that is tricky.

i'm defiantly no pro at this type of thing, but reading what you said... maybe you could be like Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket or perhaps Yukino Miyazawa from His and Her Circumstances or you can be that German Girl (i'm forgetting her name) from Neon Genesis Evangelion ... thats all that came to mind to me... i hope it helps at all

I'm not a cosplayer but doesn't this go back to the question: why cosplay? You're probably on the right direction in planning to cosplay a character that resembles you phisically, but would it be fun to you to dress up as a character you're not very fond of or one you don't even know? The cosplayers I really had a great time talking to were always really passionate about the anime that served as source of their fantasies.

That would be Asuka but the thought of trying to get hold of a Cos play plug suit within a week is pretty daunting.

That's what I was going to say. It's much more fun to cosplay as a character you like, and not a character that looks like you. It'll be much easier to cosplay as someone you know very well too. My first cosplay was Haruhi Suzumiya. My friends said I looked great, but I didn't really act like her nor did I like her - I like Mikuru better I kinda acted more like Mikuru too, cause I was nervous the whole time and I couldn't get myself to act as Haruhi so in the end, my cosplay was a cosphail.
So maybe you can tell us who your favorite characters are. Maybe you have a character that you already like, that might resemble you. Plus you could also cosplay as "generic" characters (school girls, maids, etc). That kind of cosplay is much cheaper too.
