Alright here's the deal, I love Samurai anime so if you could would you mind recommending some of the best ones you've seen. I've already seen Rurouni Kenshin and Samurai Deeper Kyo and they got me started in the whole Samurai thing.

There's bad samurai animes Very Happy
Like, "Samurai hunt for the sword" and "Labyrinth Of Flames".
Then there are some new ones, which can turn out to be really nice.
Like, "Akira Kurosawa`s Samurai 7" and "Samurai Champloo". Smile
Then there is stuff that only has the word samurai in the title but no actual samurai related items.
Like, "Samurai Shodown" and "Samurai Spirits 2" and "Samurai Troopers" and "Samurai Girl: Real Bout High School". Confused

And, if youre mentioning "Ninja Scroll" (which doesnt have samurai, only ninja) then you can mention "Ninja resurrection" and "Ninja Scroll TV" aswell Very Happy

Look into also expanding your pallette into the live-action stuff. One I can recommend is the long running series Abarenbo Shogun.

Or, if you wanna read more about Samurai, try and read Musashi's The Book of Five Rings.

You said that you've seen Rurouni Kenshin. So how about Samurai X?? NOT THE MOVIE, though Evil or Very Mad. Just the OAVs.

Ninja Scroll:the tv series is also pretty good.

"Samurai Shodown"

I believe there are 2 versions of this. There's one that's out on DVD here in the U.S. that really stinks. Avoid this at all costs.

And I think the other one is only available in Japan, though I think it might be "Samurai Spirits" with some secondary name to it. Ah well, something like that.

But please DON'T watch "Samurai Showdown: The Motion Picture." On top of a bad and short story, the horrible voice acting makes it even worse. Not to mention that the DVD is dub only.

I bought it one day, and returned it the very next day (thank goodness...) Rolling Eyes

Neither did Rurouni Kenshin (at least none of the majour characters were, anyway), but it's still set in a similar time period. I find that what really counts is just the historical Japanese setting, and not so much the social class of the characters.

Samurai-X (ugh...a name as misleading as it is stupid) is Rurouni Kenshin, Sony just had the name changed for international release.

I'd say check out the first OVA series, Tsuioku-Hen (Trust & Betrayal). The second OVA (Seishouhen, or Reflection) is okay if you keep it separate from the Kenshin franchise, but is a severe letdown as a Kenshin-related anime (if that made any sense).

Peacemaker Kurogane. And yes, any anime revolving around the Shinsengumi gets bonus points, if you ask me.

I can't say whether or not the new Seven Samurai will be good or not, because I haven't seen it. But I can probably guarantee it won't be as good as the original. So that is why I would suggest Seven Samurai, one of the greatest movies of all time, by one of the greatest directors of all time.

Also check out Yojimbo, Sanjuro, andwhile you at it anything else by The Great Kurosawa

Yes I have seen the Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) OVA's and I thought they were friggin' tight. And from word of mouth I heard Samurai Champloo is supposed to be really good. Also could you recommend some good Samurai video games. I have already played Way of the Samurai, and Seven Samurai 20xx or whatever it's called (I thought it was a dissapointment)

This post had me nodding in agreement so much & so fervently that I sprained my neck. Shall I send you the doctor's bill? Razz

I'd also like to point out that many of Kurosawa's films feature actor Toshiro Mifune (Seven Samurai & Yojimbo included). Superb actor, and one of my personal overall favourites.

I refuse to touch that game with a forty-foot pole. Trying to tie any game with hip hop rollerbladers to one of the greatest epics in cinematic history should be a crime punishable by slow, painful death.
