I remember when My Sassy Girl had just come out and Dreamworks had bought the rights to do a remake. I had wondered at the time, "Why in the world would anyone want to remake My Sassy Girl? It's great the way it is."

Around March, they finally announced plans for the remake (set for a 2006 release), attaching Gurinder Chadha ("Bend It Like Beckham") as the director. Chadha's also slated to remake Nine Wives and I Dream of Jeanie, which makes me wonder if she's bitten off more than she can chew.

But anyway, do you really think an American adaptation of a staunchly Korean film would actually work? I really think that if they tried to Americanize it, audiences would just think, "Aw man, he's a pansy, and she's just a bitch. This movie sucks." The movie relies on subtle character interactions to actually work. I hardly think having some American get slapped around by a girl would translate as well to the screen.

Any thoughts?
[yeah, it's old news, but I just found out today. ;p]

You couldn't really think that that's how Hollywood thinks, right?

This is how I think they think:
Quote:
"Look at this great movie/book/comic/whatever...I think we could make LOTS of money if we made this into an American movie. And hey we wouldn't have to pay that much for writters. We could use the money we save from thinking of a story and spend it on getting [so and so big name star] and [other so and so big name star of the opposite gender of the first one]!!!"

Technically, this would be in the manga section, since there is a comic adaptation. Anyway, I've been told the reason it works better in Korea is she stands out in a culture that tends to be more homogenous. But at least it's nice to know they're occasionally acknowledging the need for and/or appeal of an Asian perspective in doing these remakes. (Dreamworks is hiring Hideo Nakata to direct Ring 2.) And as long as Miramax isn't behind it like they're behind Shall We Dance?(Hey thanks for conveniently not releasing the original uncut film on dvd, Harvey!), I don't mind.

Eh, it wouldn't really fit in the manga section either since it's in direct reference to the movie, and not the manga adaptation.

But as for the director, I wouldn't really consider having Chadha an "Asian perspective." East Asia is vastly different from South Asia... You do have a very good point about the girl standing out in Korea though. In the states where there's such a wide clash of personality cliques, I can only imagine the movie getting negative feedback from people complaining about how they hate the characters.

I wonder if they're going to keep to the original story, though. IMDB has the story down as "A man is wooed, groomed, and ultimately dumped by a complicated, elusive woman." That... doesn't sound like My Sassy Girl.

Still, this might perhaps open the door even wider for American remakes of Asian films. Maybe this will eventually become a new trend?

I'm an anime fan so I put up with the nosebleeding, male doormats that show up in so many anime, but I don't think it would have anything near mainstream appeal. Ninja and Samurai movies work in America cause kids of all ages love war and ninjas, but I can't imagine a comedy or romance translating very well. Just try and picture Tora-San on NBC. Smile

Sakechan: I don't care about remakes as along as the original material is available. I mean it sort of sucks that I won't be able to see the Shaw Bros. movies which were ripped off(oh excuse me, "inspired") in Kill Bill, because Weinstein got to them first.

Ya know, instead of remaking My Sassy Girl, they should just release the damned thing in the US. I'd rather see subbed releases of these movies in the states (either in theatre or straight to DVD) than a remake of a recent film.

I wouldn't be surpirsed if Dreamworks did release the original My Sassy Girl over here on dvd. They did release the japanese version of The Ring over here, so it's not ruled out as an option.

Louie-kun: No I won't let it go. Imagine if the Wachowskis got Warner Bros to license the Ghost in the Shell movies and tv show, dump them in their basement, and continued to churn out Matrix movies instead, and you'll know why I hate Miramax and Tarantino.

That explains the hate for Miramax, but not Tarantino. I don't condone what Miramax has done to Shaolin Soccer, Zu Warriors, and Hero, but what does that have to do with Tarantino? As far as I know, Tarantino has not claimed that Kill Bill is completley original. It's an homage to old chop-socky and revenge films, nothing more.

EDIT: We could argue about this all day, but I'll leave it at this to avoid lockage.

He recommends the films that get hacked up by Miramax. He's their bloodhound. (See City on Fire.)
