Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere. I scanned the topics for the last few weeks and didn't see anything.
As the ANN dub reviewer and a fan of ADV's work, I was looking forward to their sure-to-be-wacky dub of this wacky anime. But I wasn't expecting anything like what I got. For those who haven't seen it: ADV subtitled the episodes and put the subs on their own disc. With the faithful treatment of the material out of the way, ADV had complete free reign to do whatever they wanted with the dub. And they went gleefully overboard. The result isn't so much a dub as an independent film. "100% Whole" is a bizarre parody of "reality" shows, featuring a "behind the scenes" look at the ADV dubbing studio. The story features backstabbing actors, cross-dressing, and scary otaku who wander the halls like fan-zombies (one actor hides in the ceiling to get away from them). Oh, and in between all this, they manage to work in dubs of seven Super Milk-chan episodes, digitally edited and culturally rewritten. Severely. Oh, and this dub is definitely NOT for children. If this was the only treatment of the anime, I'd be outraged. But the original versions are right there, in the same package. No one is making you watch the "dub". And I gotta admit, a faithful dub was pretty much impossible. When Anne (my reviewing partner and future wife) and I watched this "dub", our first reaction was to stare in disbelief. Then we started laughing. Some of the best/weirdest moments: -- Milk-chan: "By the way, David Duchovny has a nice pee-pee. You can see it in 'The Rapture'! Yum!" -- Hilary Haag's mother coming to pick her up and hearing her cursing like a sailor in the studio. -- Milk-chan: "Dammit, dubbed anime sucks! They're always changing the script!" -- The list of targets for the "Punisher Missile" includes Clear Channel Communications, Ken Lay, and for some reason, Conde Nast. -- Two actors making a bet on whether the new guy is gay. So, I'm just wondering, has anyone else seen it? What do you think? Hilarious? Or has ADV finally gone too far? ------RM |

You know that they put a straight dub track on the same disc with all the original Japanese episodes, right?
With that in mind, I don't really mind that they did what they did with their little dub extravaganza. In fact, I'm pleased that they put it on two disc. It's great that there's a disc with all the original Japanese dialogue that has a dub track, too, and it has a very faithful dub that's very well done. Then there's the 100% Whole show. So essentially, it's just like one huge extra. Disc 1: ADV goofing off Disc 2: Super Milk-chan in Japanese + English. Win, win situation. I wish Tokyopop had done this with their Initial D discs. |

I think that sounds really cool. Everyone is ALWAYS complaining about how dubs never come close to the "proper" script, so more power to ADV to go all out and do a screwed-up dub beyond belief.

I don't have a problem with it; a while back I was lamenting that there are so many purists within the anime fandom niche that an intentionally inaccurate dub playing off the whole cheesiness of the source material and adding jokes relevant to a North American audience, à la Samurai Pizza Cats, wouldn't fly today, but I was happy to have been wrong.

Well, yeah, I know now. After writing the original post, I took a look at the DVD case, deciding whether I wanted to watch the sub. In itty-bitty letters on the back, in the specs for Disc 2, it says "English 2.0". Huh??? So they did two dubs for this thing? Oh, great, now I gotta watch the other one, too. Better get to work, Mr. Dub Reviewer. Sigh... I hope ADV doesn't lose too much money. This must have cost a great deal. ------RM |

I have a question for you, Mr. Matthews, and I hope you can answer it. I was wondering; you're a dub reviewer, right? Can I ask what your background is in performance critique? Basically, what are your credentials as someone who critiques a dub? How did you get to a point where you feel confident in your judgement when it comes to English-language performance? Just curious. This isn't any sort of attack, I'm just wanting to know. |

First post...straight to the point. I read about Super-Milk Chan in Newtype, became curious, and got the DVD. Personally I think the show takes several viewings. I watched the Americanized version first and not knowing what to expect...I didn't have much of a reaction. But then I watched it again and it had me laughing pretty hard. Then I watched the faithful dub which has a different feel to it and would probably be a lot funnier if I knew a lot of the people they take stabs at. I thought the voice actors did a good job on both ends of the table. Except I would have liked them to have kept the original live action bits. I think they're funnier. But ADV went all out. They aimed to please newcomers, purists, fans who hate/like re-written scripts. No matter which way you enjoy your anime, you'll find it on one of the 2 discs. Personally I find both very enjoyable and since you have access to both the original content both dub and sub along with an Americanized dub, there isn't really any room for complaint.

I have no real credentials. This gig just sort of happened. The story goes like this: In 2000, I was the author of Last Exit Before Toll, a website-pick/commentary column on the old Anime Web Turnpike. The column's long gone, but at the time, it was really popular. When Akadot.com started up, they recruited me as a writer, just because they liked Last Exit. I said "yes", and several months and meetings later, they were ready for me to start writing. There was just one problem: We had no idea what my new column would be about. I suggested a commentary column, but they didn't want me doing the same thing I was doing at the Anipike. So, I threw out the only other idea I could think of: why don't I review dubs? No one else was doing it. I loved dubs, watched a ton of them, knew exactly what I liked and didn't like, and felt I could be eloquent and concise as to why I felt such-and-such a dub was good or bad. So I got started. I must have done something right, because the column was being read, and I was getting feedback, some from actors and directors who were happy someone was finally paying attention to them. When problems with the Akadot management became too much to deal with (long story), ANN was happy to take me on here. I don't claim to have any formal training in performance or appreciation. All I claim is to have strong, consistent opinions on what makes a good dub, and an ability to justify those opinions in such a way that you, the reader, can easily determine whether I'm on the ball or full of crap. ------RM |

(Hope people are still reading this thread. It's unbelievable the flood of posts this forum gets these days.)
When I told Anne that there was a second dub, she said she'd heard about it, but didn't know it was going to be on the disc. The way she heard it, ADV dubbed the series with a faithful translation, hated the results, and so did the wacky second dub. (Now that I think about it, I remember talking to Monical Rial at Ikasucon 2003. I remember asking about Super Milk-chan and I think she did say they were "re-dubbing" it.) Does anyone else remember anything like that? Is the "faithful" dub the first dub, considered a failure by ADV? I watched the faithful dub. It's competent, but it's not very funny. There's just too much humor that you have to be Japanese to get, not just the specific names, but the mannerisms. ------RM |

Nope, we don't consider the first dub a failure in anyway. Development on this particular series took a bit of time, and with the material, we felt it needed a bit of an extra punch. You have to remember that at this point, we've kind of re-defined comedy anime with shows like Excel Saga and Abenobashi, so we wanted something with that kind of impact. Milk-chan in its original form is wacky, but totally dependant on an insider's knowledge of Japanese culture. Also, Steven Foster was greatly impressed with the live action sequences with the original Japanese actors and felt that it didn't go far enough. So, we had meetings with the original Japanese creators, lined out our plans and got their blessings for the 100% Whole version. |

I have to Milk-Chan, it truly came out of nowhere. I first watched the Japanese OG verison first and it was pretty different, but then I watched the "100%" and it was like watching South Park without the random Kenny death and censor beeps. The some of live action parts were pretty funny (Hiding from fanboys and girl was pretty funny.), but alteast it was boring like the OG verison. I'll give ADV this, they did pick up a very odd title.

Super Milk chan.From what I've seen,it seems to be a cross between Powerpuff Girls and Ren & Stimpy.
