i guess its time for someone to start a thread about this. i think its a masterpiece, definitally one of the best manga's of the 1980's (if not all time). definitally deserves recognition just for helping pave the way for Miyazaki's films. the new editions that Viz is putting out are great. not only are they in the original format with untranslated sound effects, but the size is quite large, about the size of a comic book. because of the complexity of the art the first printing made it difficult to understand some of the scenes.

Am I the only one who didn't have a problem with the old printing? Sure, the art is bigger in the new edition, but each volume is also really thin. I liked being able to get the next volume of Nausicaa and spend a couple days on it. Although the brown tint they use on the art is rather nice. Reminds me a little of Ghost World.
But yeah...Nausicaa is great. Anyone who hasn't read it yet needs to. Especially if they were waiting for the movie to come out on DVD (Damn you Disney!), and the comic is MUCH better anyways. |

well, your not going to get anything more out of it by reading the new versions, as both has exellent translation. the new format it nice though.
interesting point about Ghost World though. its been a while since i read it, so ill have to check it out once more |

I've read it too, but I think because people cannot really argue with how good it is and do not just want to write "I've read it", there is a short thread.

Nausicaa DVD and I'm sure there are places you can find it for less. It just happened to be the first place I looked at. |

count me in too i loved this manga i could'nt even put it down when i first read it thing its one of the better mangas i've read so, besides the point, when is the movie coming out i really wanna see it, and plus i love miyazaki's art work i think i spelt it right o well, and i've only seen one of his movies but the movie i really wanna see is grave for fireflys seems good.

I have the first two books so far and yes, I'm certainly enjoying it. While I'm still a noob with both Anime and Manga, it was Spirited Away that got me interested, and I went through all of the available Miyazaki movies first (I even have Panda Go Panda!)
BTW, Grave of the Fireflies is not a Miyazaki film (if that's what the poster above thought) but it is a truly awsome movie. |

I actually just finished the Perfect Collection volumes 2 and 3, and am about to start vol. 4 (got them all from my library). I'm surprised that everyone says the new editions are really big, since the perfect collection books were already as big as the old Ranma 1/2 editions published by Viz.
I agree Nausicaa's a classic, although it's a classic to me in the way many famous novels are classics: they're sometimes tough to slog through, but in the end you're glad you read them. It was only in perfect collection vol. 2 that I really got into the series, mainly because of the storyline and characters. The art is not my favorite (I know that Miyazaki's a genius, but still.....) I have a question about Nausicaa's layout though. The extensive use of boxes on the pages (rather than the varied layout I see in most manga) makes it seem a lot like an American comic book. Is this the way older manga were done, or was this just Miyazaki's own design choice? |

Miyazaki's art style seems to have had some influence from Europian comics, not so much in the way he draws his characters but the detail of the background. As for the layout question, that is the style that older manga is usually drawn in. It started to change around Akira (as one writer put it Akira was like new Hollywood sweeping away the old cinema style) and evolved into the style that most of todays manga uses.
