I'm getting kind of upset over this. Nausicaa.net has SA listed as playing at a theater right near my house....however, looking at the theater site (as well as moviefone and fandango) they don't have it listed as playing this weekend!!

Someone needs their butt kicked Twisted Evil

EDIT: Well, this blows for me. The theater near me was listed up until yesterday. And now it's not listed anymore. *sigh* Ah well, I guess I'll have to wait for it to come to video.

I understand there is a lot of hype about this movie (being the "most celebrated animated movie in Japan"), But i have to be honest, I doubt I'll go see it. I've seen some of this guy's other works (Lupin, Princess Monoke), and while they are good, I just did not care for them.

*blink*

You are the first person I've seen that didn't like Lupin. I like Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro better than Princess Mononoke, but in general, I like just about all of Miyazaki's work.

if you think so much anime sucks, then why are you here? to point out what you don't like, to deter some of us from checking out that anime?

Okay, I retract my previous statement about the 85/10/5% thing. It was a stupid comment, so if you didn't see it, don't worry about it Embarassed Anyway, I just read a review on Spirited Away on chicagotribune.com (Micheal Chikilis is in it, no way!). It does sound more like a kid flick, which is not my bag (Except Lilo and Stitch, because Stitch is the s--t).

Oh, and by the way cheif, I'm just giving my opinion. There is a lot of anime that I do like (and yes, a few titles outside of Mecha/sci-fi, like GTO and Ranma 1/2).

oh, i'm a chief now? Very Happy I know there is a lot of bad anime out there, but 85% is too steep, so it's good that you retracted your percent thing. i hate percents. but then again, if there wasn't anime, what would be on MAT3K?

Ok, Hotaru, glad we cool now. Anyway, I have heard somethings about this MAT3K, IS it on a website or something? I heard that They parody bad anime like MST3K parodies bad sci-fi.
Does MAT3K do Macross II, that would be REALLY funny!

Sadly I haven’t even seen a theater in my area even so much as hint that they will be showing Spirited Away. That’s just my luck (actually it’s my location), but it really doesn’t bother me much. I agree that there is no substitution for “the big screen” but my DVD player works just fine and not going to the theater saves me about half of what I need to purchase it on disc.

As for the other matter that got discussed here, I have to agree with SSGTR’s assessment of rotten anime. I agree that anime is better overall than live action shows (especially here in the States), but that doesn’t mean that it automatically follows that anime is “all good”.

I usually find myself wading through piles of garbage (or at least piles of not so great stuff) that I simply do not like (for various reasons) to find the small percentage of good stuff that is out there. It’s so rare to find a producer that puts great artwork, great story line, great soundtrack, and great animation all in the same package. The payoff is that the “good stuff” is usually spectacular.

I’ll even admit to watching some stuff that isn’t so great just because it strikes my personal fancy, but that doesn’t mean that I’d show it to a non-anime lover as a shining example of why they should start watching anime.

To answer Hotaru’s (chief’s?) question about why folks who don’t like a bunch of anime come here…I have no clue. All I can tell you is why “I” come here. I come here (and other places) to discuss the topic of anime. I come here too give BOTH sides of my opinion to others, and to receive BOTH sides of their opinions. But most importantly, I come to find out what new anime is out there and which ones are worth me spending my hard earned currency on.

Everyone has to realize that opinions are like…uh…bellybuttons. Everyone has one, and they are all just a little different. GROUP HUGS EVERYONE…come on get in here (you know you want to)! Heh heh.

Message Ends,

Saxton

Well, I'm not quite sure exactly what part of IL you are in, but according to http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/sen/theaters.php, it's playing in 2 theaters in Chicago and 1 in Evanston.
