Remember my post down not long ago about My Scene Barbie?
animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=931 Maybe I'm a bit retentive when it comes to the use of the words anime and manga, but what's so wrong with american cartoons and comics that people are more willing to associate their products with something foreign as apposed to something domestic? Their raping the artform by using it's terms as buzzwords to make a buck. First case in point, Lego's Bionical. I've been a toy collecter for about 10 years now and really been following the Bionical series closely since it was first released in 2001. Never once did I think "This has such a great anime feel!". Of course not, what does anime even feel like? The least they could do is a bit of research before making something out of it that it isn't. "Anime-manga"? They're making up words now. Thankfully it's a minor case since it was only really mentioned once (just repeated), not exactly worth mentioning in the news though, but that's none of my business... Second case is a bit more major. Of all people I would think Tokyopop would know what manga is, but maybe they need a refresher. I'm not sure if it's Disney's influence causing them to do this or just lack of creativity to come up with a new name, but adding Lizzie McGuire and Kim Possible to their Cine-Manga lineup? Come on! Couldn't they call them "Cine-Comics" instead? Yeah, they did Monsters Inc., but that's an actual japanese adaptation of the movie so it works, and I doubt anyone will argue with them doing the Digimon manga. Just how hard is this to understand? It's seriously becoming a problem, turning anime and manga into simple buzzwords instead of showing just a little bit of creativity or originality in order to be descriptive. I don't expect everyone to know what anime or manga is, but if you can't use it right then why use it at all? Why are we shunning out own forms of entertainment anyway? What is so wrong with being a cartoon or a comic book today? Why does Disney's Treasure Planet (a great movie btw) have to be "anime inspired", why can't it just be a great piece of animation on it's own? Why does the TV series Firefly have to be an "anime ripoff" why can't it just be a TV series about an eclectic group of space travelers? Is it so hard? Before I finish I just want to make it clear that I'm not anti-Disney, Anti-Lego, Anti-Tokyopop, Anti-Creative Capers, or anti-anything else in here, simply making a statement and a rant, that's all.
