I've really been wanting to watch this movie. By the way, you should mention that it comes on Imaginasian TV every once in a while (they usually repeat their movies every 2 or 3 months).

... and closing sealed it for me. Sounds refreshing, and I'm always in the mood for some "old school" anime. Though, I'll admit that it strikes me as a bit odd that the anime this OVA is a spin-off of was licensed by Saban (now expired, by looking at its entry), and the fact that the main behind it is involved in Pokémon might drive some people off by that connection alone. Since it is, as you say, sufficient to stands on its merits alone, I'll definitely be checking this one out. |

wow...two years before I was born there was bad audio.
so then we get 80s recordings on a lot of the dvds? wow. I'm not into sound quality much- as long as I can hear it and its not muffled or off synch with the mouth flaps i'm pretty good. But that was intresting to see where Dolby started. I bet those guys are rich now. question for you: with blue ray dvds and such coming out does that mean they'll have to switch to a new sound system or do they just fit it to the old one? (can of poorly written but its the only way I can get it out) Nice review! |

Haha. I would've plugged it more, but sadly our license expired a few months ago. (We usually do broadcast licenses for two years.) Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll be renewing it anytime soon, but rest assured the idea will stay in the back of my mind. 
Both HD-DVD and BluRay support all of the digital formats DVD supports, plus new ones that sound even better (but currently no receivers on the market can decode). However, what you must remember is that when the only copy you have of a show is in poor condition, digital copies will only be perfect copies of that poor-condition master, and there's only so much you can do to clean it up. It's like making an audio CD of a voice mail. You can enhance it all you want, but it's still gonna sound like it came from the phone. For what is perhaps the worst example of crappy 80's movie audio, check out the closing scenes of Vampire Hunter D in Japanese. (grimace) |

I've not seen Time Stranger, but this review has convinced me that I absolutely must. Considering the flashback format of the story, and the focus on a strong central female character, I'm somewhat surprised the review didn't make a direct comparison with Satoshi Kon's Millennium Actress -- although, to be fair, Kon is mentioned, so I suppose it is implicit.
Fine review -- I'm really beginning to think of Buried Treasure as my favourite feature. - abunai |

Great column. Your appreciation for this title really comes through in the writing. Needless to say, I'm convinced.
Well, you can count me as one more convert among the ranks. Because of the review, I just ordered this online and can't wait to see it.

I saw your tailer on a rented disc a couple times and a spark was lit. I even watched it a couple more times and made sure I wrote down the title before sending the disc back in. Unfortunately I lost the scrap of paper I had written the name down on and ended up forgetting what I needed to be looking for. Thankfully you've managed to jog my memory and now the trail is finally warm again. Thanks to you I'll finally get a second chance to watch something I've been meaning to for a long time now. |

Yup. The Saban production spliced together material from the original "Sengoku majin Go-Shogun" TV anime and another show - "Aku dai sakusen Srungle" (which, interestingly, seemed to feature designs by Amano Yoshitaka) under the name "Macron 1". It looked and sounded terrible (anyone surprised?) but I think many people in my country, who are in their <ahem> late 20's, have some fond memories of it. |

Wow i actually just finished watching the old NuTech release of this movie yesterday.
I was really impressed by the detailed animation (it defintly had high budget for it's time) and i really enjoyed the unique and dark atmosphere this movie had. It almost had an artsy experimental feel to it in some places. This movie can be bought for as cheap as $5.36 from Dvd Pacific. Athough still widely available it is now out of print. It unfortunately must have been a poor seller to still have so many copies laying around. |

Another great article! I'm glad this one is so easy to get. I finally found a copy of Night on the Galactic Railroad at Half.com a few days ago. On the other hand, Time Stranger was just a few clicks away at RACS. Both are on order now. I wonder which one will get here first?

A strong opener like really grabbed me right from the get go and I felt compelled to read the entire review. And not only that you include connected the reader to a director that already quite popular on this site according to recent polls. More importantly I have now added Time Stranger to my Anime takeout queue so hopefully I will be able to see that in the near future. And strangely enough when I first added this title to my AT the availability was nearly completely green yet within a few hours of then it's already come down a lot, apparently other people are interested as well. |

Once again, I read Buried Treasure, and now I feel as if I really AM on a hunt for buried treasure. In this case, I need to find someone who is selling it who is willing to ship it to Asia.

This one popped up on one of the major VOD services (if it's a CPM title then it was probably Anime Selects) on a fairly regular basis about a year and a half ago, albeit under the name "Time Etranger." That's where I got to see it. I was surprised to find out it was actually derived from a mecha series, as the only hint of that in the movie is the little toy dangling from the rear view mirror in Remy's car in early scenes.
Justin's right in saying that it feels much more like a Satoshi Kon work than something produced by a guy who later directed Pokemon movies. And it does stand quite well on its own; while it has the feel of being a final chapter in a longer story, you shouldn't have any problem sorting out the character relationships based solely on the movie content. While it was never one of my favorites, I must agree that it's a quality story worth the trouble to track down and see. |

Does anyone else think that the theme song sounds like the song Memory in Green by Vangelis that is used in Blade Runner? It is amazing how different this series is from Go Shogun. I think the impact of the film is stronger if you have seen the tv series, especially since I tend to remember Bundle's gang as a bunch of bad guys.
I find it funny that this movie came out around the same time as the Kadokawa film Toki no Tabibito which is often referred to as Time Stranger. Both are excellent films and were available amongst the very few fan subs in the 80s. |
