It's dead, Jim. Christ, between this and (according to SEGA's latest financial report) Yakuza Kiwami 3 not performing well, it's a grim time for these sorts of sandbox brawler games.

At this point TGA is becoming a curse event after one of its "most anticipated" hero shooter as the last game announced by Keighley was shut down within few months.

The report I read cited Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance as the disappointing titles for why their financial report was down and didn't mention Kiwami 3. https://www.segasammy.co.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/pdf/en/ir/20260615_ManagementMTG_2026_All_e.pdf According to Reddit Sleuths franchise sales during Kiwami 3 did about the same as Pirate Yakuzmi which is impressive considering it was a remake and franchise sales during remakes tend to be much lower as we saw with 0 DC and Kiwami 1+2 https://www.reddit.com/r/yakuzagames/comments/1tbbml5/sega_shared_numbers_for_the_sales_of_the_yakuza/#lightbox Sandbox brawler games are safe... and with Stranger Than Heaven coming on the horizon I doubt SEGA is sweating. It sucks for Gang of Dragon and Nagoshi though and people looking forward to it but the genre will do just fine. |

I'm glad to hear Kiwami 3 Dark Ties did well. It's probably the best way to play the game if you don't know Japanese given how bad the previous 2 releases are. Also not surprised to see Sega Racing Crossworld being a dumpster fire.. the lack of voices and weird DLC choice was annoying. As far as the Nagoshi Studio situation.. I'm starting to wonder if this isn't a sign on why Nagoshi left SEGA to begin with. The Yakuza franchise certainly has taken off since his departure and while I'll always appreciate his earlier work on the series sometimes creators just fall off, you know? Mismanaging a company and franchise and it imploding is a sign of maybe RGG is in better hands now. |

If we ignore the fact that some of the creative changes of the most recent games like Yakuza 0 director’s cut and Yakuza 3 Dark Ties haven’t gone over too well with the same audience that ate up Yakuza 7. Also mentioning mismanaging a company and franchise as criticism when Sega has become infamous for this over the decades is funny. |

I mentioned this on other articles about Nagoshi and I've heard that his departure from SEGA had to do in fact due to the underperformance of the Sakura Wars reboot. Apparently SEGA invested a lot in the project, Sonic Team was in charge of developing the game, Tite Kubo did the character designs, they made an anime to tie-in with the new game release and they also developed new Sakura Wars some mobile games, but despite all of the hype the main game didn't sell as well as SEGA expected, don't know if they were expecting New Sakura Wars to perform a major Atlus game. Don't know much about the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, but maybe that was the reason why Nagoshi had to leave SEGA. Honestly, I'd love to know more about Gang of Dragon's development and what went wrong in detail. |

With the 2019 game, Japan had a half-assed launch with gameplay issues that didn't get fixed in a patch until the western versions were about to come out so it took months. As for the west, it was half-assed in a different way because you couldn't pre-order digitally so there was no way to find out the price of the Deluxe Edition in particular until on release day plus for those who got review copies, they didn't get the above-mentioned patch. Combine these with the story-related issues, specifically regarding the fate of the original cast, and it might be easy to see why it didn't do so hot. |

So is Gang of Dragon even coming out or is it vaporware at this point.

The porject is completely canceled, NetEase pulled funding for the project back in March and Nagoshi's studio shut down. I honestly don't know what was Nagoshi, his team and NetEase think. Gang of Dragon was obviously a spiritual successor to the Yakuza series, but the thing with spiritual successors is that they usually done because the creator's original project hasn't seen a new release in quite a while, there are exceptions of course, like how Street Fighter I's creator left Capcom for SNK to create Fatal Fury, but in the last ten or so years we have seen spiritual successors like Mighty No. 9 (Mega Man), Bloodstained (Castlevania) and Yooka Laylee (Banjo Kazooie) and only Bloodstained managed to be well received, but they had something in common, their predecessors hadn't had a new release in years, on the other hand, Yakuza kept having new releases without Nagoshi's involvent and the series was still performing well. Gang of Dragon would've had difficulties to differentiate itself from Yakuza, not to mention they had to make their own assets from scratch, from what I've seen, SEGA can manage to develop new Yakuza titles very quickly compared to other series because they can reuse tons of assets. |

Which has been a problem with the games that preceded 7 looking too similar. Which even that game’s version of Kamurocho looked barely any different. |
