When we needed her most, Minky Momo returns

And with Pierrot also bringing back their magical girl franchise with LuluttoLilly and Toei giving us fun mysteries with Star Detective Pretty Cure, 2026 is a good year to be a magical girl fan

(Also to any "wise guys" out there, spare us your unfunny "curse of Minky Momo" jokes, those have never been funny)

It’s true that no franchise stays dead now, not that I’m complaining. Getting the director of Witch Hat Atelier is an inspired choice.

Momo get iPhone.

Memes aside, this has a lot of potential and a lot of interesting implications. The pessimistic struggle in the second half of 2nd/Enduring Dreams was a bit of a mess (what do you mean, now you're arguing that helping people with magic is "just a deus ex machina" when there is a clear and obvious diabolus ex machina sabotaging Momo?), but I think "is that what they really want or just what some influencer told them to want?" would be a more interesting idea that doesn't just fall into depression.

Too late, not here, but in some animation pages that I follow in social media all of the publications that mention Minky Momo they always reference the show's curse and earthqukaes, it seems more people these days are aware of Minky Momo by people making videos about her and the urban myth, which is not bat per se, but I'd say it wouldn't be so bad if maybe the original series and its '90s version could be more accesible.

Both series have been on Crunchyroll for the past two years now.

I did not know that, but not everybody has Crunchyroll and most people don't use it to watch really old anime. I'd say that people it'd be nice if the original Minky Momo were available on YouTube, there's also the fact that Minky was actually dubbed into multiple languages, and for some reason some of the dubs were based on the Harmony Gold English dub and the titular character is know as Gigi, but those dubs are difficult to find, if not outright lost.

Given how nobody watched Lulutto Lily on YouTube I doubt Minky Momo would get much more attention being available on YouTube than it would on Crunchyroll. Maybe if it was on Tubi or something.

Hey, I watched LuluttoLilly!

And yes, I get it, the "curse" superstition has a lot of jokes behind it and people like doing it. Fans are just annoyed because despite the historical significance of the entire series and not just that one famous plot twist, despite it being on a streaming service so big that things that end up on other services are called "jailed," despite it being a fun show people should want to watch, this is the only thing a lot of people in English-speaking anime fandom either know or care to know about the series.
