Since there's no way I'm going to be able to listen to this whole thing before I go to sleep, let me just say, as someone who loved the Lost finale: of course it's nothing like Evangelion! If it had been like that, it would have sat us down for an hour and lectured us on the psyche of the characters and the themes of the story, which if we were paying attention we'd have realized anyway.

No, the ending of Lost actually reminded me of Haibane Renmei, in that spoiler[nothing is actually explained, but instead opted to only give resolution to characters rather than plot]. Whether you think it was any good is a whole 'nother question.

Needless to say I can't wait to hear your opinions on the finale. Very Happy

I understood how CR was able to finally get the streaming license for Giant Killing in the US ... the production committee was waiting to see what interest they would get, and then for the countries where there was no interest, "why not".

Obviously Latin America love their association football anime, the chance of any R4 countries this side of the Pacific was little or none.

But this explains why the UK is one of the countries that got the Giant Killing stream.

I really liked Rintaro's Metropolis, myself. It's absolutely beautiful, for one, and there are a lot of great elements. It's got its flaws, I suppose, but it wasn't bad in the least.

I've never seen any commercials for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on TV!

Well, I'm glad Tim is watching LoGH. Remember, even though there are tons of named characters, you can follow pretty well just by remembering the core cast. It really is an amazing, intelligent series.

I always intended to see Metropolis at some point. I'm glad to hear there will be an uncut version.
---
Why do people hate the Metropolis anime so much? I like it. It's got some problems without a doubt (such as terribly sloppy storytelling as you mentioned) but it's still such a fantastic looking and lively movie. Everything about it is just so vibrant and alive.
---
I agree with Zac. I loved the beginning of Lost. In fact, I really liked the following couple seasons. By the...fourth? maybe fifth? season, it completely went off the rails and abandoned so much of the earlier stuff. They killed off or got rid of a lot of the more interesting characters and replaced them with too many new ones who never really got enough focus to make them interesting. The plot got absurdly convoluted and way too far out. I finally gave up on it mid way through season five.
---
Yeah, there looks to be a ton off good movies out recently or in the near future. Redline obviously. I'm also looking forward to Summer Wars, First Squad, King of Thorns, Time of Eve, Musashi and Evangelion 2.0.
---
Wait, The Fifth Element was good? I remember hearing it was pretty awful so I never saw it.
---
I agree with Tim, the single biggest thing that disappoints me about modern anime is the lack of SciFi. I don't buy into the idea that there's no good anime anymore. It's still certainly possible to find good stuff to watch. What you just don't see though anymore is good SciFi. Especially more hard SciFi.
---
I'm a Canadian fan which clearly is a bit different. I do feel a bit like companies should make steams available here. I mean, it just seems like they can't be bothered (Hulu is the worst) I really don't see why it's so bloody impossible to include Canada.
---
I really enjoyed hearing from Tim. He's a very interesting guy.

On the topic of pre-existing properties that should be made into anime, I think Tamora Pierce's fantasy novels would be awesome shoujo series.

Re: Funimation

I do hope they find a better-fit parent company in the world of entertainment, one that understands "The Biz," preferably with deep pockets and connections.

Re: Speculation and Fans

Like a chicken running around with it's head cut-off, losing its sh*t. Some folks need to chill, take a deep breath and think rationally before heading to the message boards. Or just wait for the next ANNCast to explain it all, instead of listening to anxiety-riddled, brushfire speculations on the boards.

Re: Halo: The Anime Failure

There is literally NO EXCUSE for that to have sucked as hard as it did! None. Micro$oft has more money and resources than you'd find in most countries; that this tanked is both a wonder -you have to work really hard to fail that bad- and a head scratcher.

If they pooled all the money they found in the couches around Microsoft HQ and Bill Gates Main Home in Seattle, they could probably have purchased Studio Ghibli to make the damned thing (Master Chief "Totoro")! It boggles my mind that they failed so horribly.

Re: Twilight Anime

Please. No.

Re: The UK Scene

OUCH! Next time you bitch about the US having it bad... Someone's always got it worse. But THEIR BROADBAND PUTS OURS TO SHAME! 50 megs?! Well played, UK.

Tim Maughan was a great guest! Hilarious, knowledgeable and articulate! Bring him back!

Redline and Legend of the Galactic Heroes; on the list.

The Daily Mail...? Sounds like Fox News Corp.

Overfiend... *facepalm* So HORRIBLE!

LOL at the Heat Guy J transition Zac. That's the funniest thing you've ever done!!

Interesting podcast guys! I love the old Manga UK Curse dubs! I've heard that story many times haha. They were dubbing titles by adding curses, to get higher ratings, so kids would think "wow this isn't for children! Haha!". Reminds me of how fansubbers add the f-bomb to naruto episodes or something. At any rate those old Manga UK dubs are great Very Happy . They are either amazingly good (A Wind Named Amnesia, Cyber City, Dominion Tank Police) or amazingly bad BUT FUNNY (Angel Cop, Mad Bull 34). Michael Bakewell directed a lot of the dubs, and I really thought he knew what he was doing. I liked his stuff. When he was good, he was great, and when he was bad, he was funny.

Zac: Yeah I agree Twitter is amazing at staying connected with all the anime people/bloggers/critics. I made some really great friends through it, and I'm able to talk to all the great bloggers and other big people in anime. For example...I've talked to Tim Maughan on twitter before. I would have no idea who he was if it wasn't for twitter lol. He was a great guest too, had some interesting stuff to say.

Justin: "The good one"

The anime was pretty fun to me.

"could've really tightened up that narrative and make that a working film"

Replace Metropolis with Steamboy, and I'll agree.

"cut out a 5 min scene because it had nunchuks"

Yeah, you couldn't even see the nunchuk scenes with Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon over there until recently.

Zac: "I have to defend Evangelion as a coherent narrative."

You sure? Rolling Eyes

Nice to hear an Englishman on the podcast! I'll admit I'd not heard of Tim, I'll have to check him out. Hopefully I'll get to meet you Wink

So much I can comment on for once!
aah, Star Fleet, that brings back so much memories Smile I was mad for that as a kid.
Another pre Akira anime I remember from my youth, Ulysses 31. That is so bad looking back at it now!

UK DVD's; yeah, it's dying a death over here at the moment. There are only a few high street stores with DVD's on their shelves, and as Tim said most of the collectors import R1 DVDs, just because of the range of choice you get compared to us!

Regarding the UK con scene, I know a fair bit about it as most of my friends are regular con goers, as well as con organisers Wink

London Expo is more often than not described as a glorified dealer room; it's ran more for the vendors to tout their wares than anything. Beez and Manga Ent made a bit of effort to get some American voice actors over, but since the money is drying up that's getting less and less now. Expo does get a lot of people through the door though (several thousand), but you'll normally only stay there a few hours or just the day.
A lot of the kiddies go there just to show off their cosplays on the grass outside the entrance (lots of complaints at the moment at Expo's plans to charge ticket entrance to anyone cosplaying outside, as lots of them turn up and don't ever go in).

Most of the fanbase I know don't really consider Expo as a true con though, for them the true con is the 3 day event; you turn up on the Friday and stay in a local hotel (normally the venue for the con) and leave on the Sunday. This style of convention is normally ran by a group of fans; more often than not those associated with the old clubs.
The biggest convention of this type is Amecon, which is currently capped at 1200 tickets. Most of the other 3 day cons are around the 250 to 500 attendance figures, so you'd describe them as small and cosy Razz
For these cons though anime is not really the true focus any more; it's a common interest certainly, but the screening rooms are almost always empty. It's more just a big social meeting point; a chance for the kids (majority 16 to 25 age group) to spend 3 days with like minded people, cosplay, and just party. The events are structured around making it a fun event, and industry just doesn't have much of a presence there any more (which is a shame).

Yes Zac, it's a bunch of kids screaming internet memes at each other *sigh, I feel old*

Personally, I think for the fanbase we are supporting we may be getting a bit over saturated with cons. England's not a big place (a lot smaller than, erm, any one of your states) , so it's not that hard to attend all the UK cons if you really wanted. We've got something like 6 or 7 active ones now though, so it's a bit overkill. It's all too easy though for a bunch of us to go "hey, lets start a con!" and lo and behold you've got another one.... (been there).
But, if the kids want to party, let them party.....

Final note, Tim, good to see you've picked up the UK history project; I'm sure Helen has given you a wealth of information there and it's good to see it moving again. Too many of the anime fans here have no idea how anime started in the UK (Eastercon anyone?), and we really need something written about it. Good luck!

Evangelion's problem isn't coherency so much as Anno never even bothered to come up with a plot. I mean Antartica blows up? Does Anno even know how big Antartica is? The crater of the meteor that killed the Dinosaurs was only a 100 miles long. Not to mention why their using Children is never explained since I doubt anything necessary for piloting EVAs is lost by going through puberty, and besides Asuka and Rei are clearly going through puberty.

I'd try downloading the mp3, muxing the audio with a still frame video, creating a youtube account, uploading to youtube (privately, of course Smile ), then clicking the captions button to get google to create them for you. (oh, and watch the hilarity ensue as I'm sure google's automatic transcription service knows nothing about anime vocabulary)

Or if that's too much work you could always, um, listen to it.
