del Toro Submits Script for Pacific Rim 2 Film

posted on by Kyle Hallmark

Guillermo del Toro announced on Twitter on Thursday that he submitted the script and budget for the Pacific Rim 2 film. He added in the post, "No answers yet. If anything happens, I will post."

Universal and Legendary Entertainment previously announced in a joint statement that they were delaying the Pacific Rim 2 sequel film. The two companies had planned last year to release the film on April 7, 2017, before delaying it to August 4, 2017 and then removing the film from Universal's release schedule entirely.

Universal said that it and Legendary "are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013's Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

Hollywood Reporter had reported in September that the sequel to Legendary Pictures and Guillermo del Toro's live-action Pacific Rim film had been "halted indefinitely."

Entertainment Weekly then reported that Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro said that "As far as I'm concerned, [the Pacific Rim sequel is] not gone." He noted that the movie "moved further," and said that he may work on another film in the meantime.

Warner Brothers had distributed the first film in 2013, but Legendary ended its co-financing and co-producing deal at the end of that year. Legendary Pictures now has a five-year production and financing with Universal Pictures, but sources told The Hollywood Reporter that there was trouble with the business relationship.
