Discotek Runs Poll for Possible Standard Definition BD Releases

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda

Discotek Media began a poll on its official Facebook page on Tuesday asking if customers would prefer if the company begin releasing certain titles on Blu-ray Disc releases in standard definition. The titles planned for this type of release include long television anime series, classic anime, and titles that have had DVD releases but with no HD masters.

If Discotek begins this new release method, the company said it will also release anime with HD masters on both a standard definition Blu-ray Disc set and a more expensive HD Blu-ray Disc set, with no DVD sets. Discotek will also still release films, shorter OVAs, and shorter series in standard definition on DVD or Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo packs, with new titles produced in HD releasing on Blu-ray Disc only.

The publisher cited less discs, cheaper production costs, improved durability of Blu-ray Discs over DVDs, consumer preference for Blu-ray Discs, better subtitles, demand for previous DVD releases on Blu-ray Disc, and easier storage as reasons for shifting to the new production.

The poll ends on February 19.

Sentai Filmworks announced in September it will gradually phase out DVDs from its product lineup by 2019.
