Studio Chizu Launches Countdown Website Featuring The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Anime Film

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

Studio Chizu launched a countdown on Friday on the "https://miraidematteru.com" website ("Mirai de Matteru" means "Waiting in the Future") that features a logo, video, and insert song for Madhouse and Mamoru Hosoda's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o Kakeru Shōjo) anime film. (Note: The website is meant to be accessed through smartphones.)

The image on the website and on Studio Chizu's Twitter post also states, "Time waits for no one."

The countdown ends on July 18 at 12:00 p.m. JST (July 17 at 11:00 p.m. EDT).

Hosoda adapted Yasutaka Tsutsui's 1965 novel The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o Kakeru Shōjo) into an award-winning anime film in 2006. The film is a loose sequel to the original novel, sharing the premise of a girl gaining the ability to time travel, but with different characters and situations. The novel's main character appears in the anime film as the protagonist's aunt.

The book has also been adapted into multiple live-action works, including a 1972 television series, a 1983 live-action film, a 1994 television series, a 1997 live-action film, and a 2010 live-action film. More recently, a live-action television series premiered in July 2016. The 1972 series, which featured a sequel story that diverged from Tsutsui's novel, itself inspired a stage play adaptation in February.

Hosoda and Studio Chizu's latest film, Mirai no Mirai (Mirai of the Future), opens in Japan on July 20.
