Lupin the 3rd: Bye Bye, Lady Liberty (special)

This is the first Lupin tv special to be made. One Lupin tv special has been made each year to date since Bye Bye Liberty Crisis/Goodbye Lady Liberty (1989)

When Michael tells Zenigata that "Lupin & this" have left the apartment, he holds up his pinky when saying the word "this". This gesture is one way to refer to someone's girlfriend or mistress in Japanese culture.

The Three Masons organization is a parody of the real life cult called the Freemasons or just "Masons". Freemasonary operate completely different in reality as opposed to what was parodied in this TV special. They are not sinister in purpose and have no centralized headquarters. Instead they are a fraternity organized at independent lodges that answer to a "Grand Lodge" based on regional delineations. Some Grand Lodges may not always recognize one another. Freemasons participate in ceremonies that emphasize symbolism and vary between lodges. Each member holds a title of varying ranks, unlike in this TV special where three masons have the top rank while the rest are the bottom rank. Freemasons and other similar organizations have been often accused by conspiracy theorists for controlling world events behind the scenes.

The English dub wasn't avalible in the US until 18 years later.

When Jigen describes Lupin as "whipped", he is refering to "pussy-whipped" because Lupin has subject himself completely to his partly seen girlfriend.

When Zenigata is chanting "Nanmaidabu, nanmaidabu" he is using the Japanese contraction of Namu-amida-butsu, a Buddhist prayer that although its meaning is debatable it is more or less a practical equivalent to "rest in peace".

At the subway station, Yasuo Ohtsuka can be seen stepping off the train before Zenigata. In the same scene Osamu Dezaki is seen passing behind the disguised Lupin.

Garrick Hagon & Lisa Ross who do the English voices of Goemon & Isabella respectively are married in real life.

The helicopters used to pursue Lupin in the opening are Pache Gunships.

The controller Michael was using to play his space shooter game on his portable computer is a Famicon controller.

Goof: There are Saguaro cacti in the North Arizona town, when in reality they grow in South Arizona.

The pianist at the New Orleans night club was modeled after Stevie Wonder.
