Prior to this live action film, there were two different announcements on a live action Zelda TV series that were both ended up being rumors. The first of these rumors was back in 2015 when the Wall Street Journal announced plans on a live action series that was meant to be streamed on Netflix. However this announcement was immediately debunked by Nintendo who denied the accuracy of the report. The other rumor that was made four years later, involved both Entertainment magazine and the website The Wrap; both reported that Adi Shankar was in talks to produce a Legend of Zelda television series. Shankar however, clarified on Instagram that he was actually producing an animated Devil May Cry series.
Before this film was officially announced, both Wes Ball and Shigeru Miyamoto have both been trying to get this film off the ground for a decade.
Filmmaker Wes Ball has cited the Studio Ghibli films as an inspiration for this film.
This film was released on the same year as the 40th anniversary of the first NES Legend of Zelda’s North American release.
