Trivia:

Porco Rosso is based on manga Hikoutei Jidai (飛行艇時代, The Age of the Flying Boat) by Hayao Miyazaki, part of Zassou Note series. Visit Nausicaa.net for sample pages and more information.

First planned as a 30-45 minute in-flight movie on Japan Airlines.

Miyazaki mentioned in a chatroom that the ghost plane scene was inspired from a passage in a Roald Dahl story.

There are many connections between Porco Rosso and 3,000 Leagues in Search of Mother (a series Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki worked on in the 70's.) Porco's real name is Marco. Marco is the name of the main character in 3,000LSM. In Porco Rosso, Porco's plane is maned The Folgore, which is the name of the first ship Marco takes to Argentina in 3000LSM. Fio's real name is Fiolina, the name of Marco's best friend in 3000LSM. Porco and Marco are both from Genova.
