Ulfuls Band's Tortoise Matsumoto Makes TV Anime Shorts

Waimo-kun~Kiiroi Kao Shite Babanban to premiere on October 6

Singer Tortoise Matsumoto of the Ulfuls rock band is creating a series of anime shorts called Waimo-kun~Kiiroi Kao Shite Babanban, which will premiere on the Music On! TV music satellite and cable channel on October 6.

Matsumoto based his yellow-faced main character Waimo-kun on sketches he himself drew on concert advertising flyers around 1989. The flyers' sketches had a character that yelled out "Wai mo! Wai mo!" in cartoon speech balloons. "Wai mo!" means "Me too!" (as in "I'm going to the live concert too!") in the local Osaka dialect. Matsumoto eventually grew attached to Waimo-kun, and fans of Ulfuls adopted the character as a mascot.

Yūichi Fukuda (The Three Young-Men in Midnight anime) is scripting the anime, while computer anime director Tomohisa Ishikawa (composer of Appleseed: Ex Machina, Innocent Venus, Kite Liberator) is helming the anime project. Ulfuls previously performed the second opening theme song of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, "Baka Survivor" (Stupid Survivor).
