Organizers "had to coordinate with companies in U.S., Japan" to screen film

Canada's "Plastic Paper: Winnipeg Festival of Animated, Illustrated and Puppet Film" will screen several Japanese-animated shorts and Summer Wars, the award-winning film from Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), from May 5 to May 8.

Summer Wars follows a modern-day family on a midsummer adventure in the real and virtual worlds. The film opened in Japan on August 1, 2009, and has since been scheduled in Spain's Sitges, England's Leeds Film Festival, Germany's Berlin International Film Festival, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the New York International Children's Film Festival, the Irish Film Institute in Dublin, and the Hawaii International Film Festival. Summer Wars will screen in Winnipeg on May 8 at 7:00 p.m.

On May 5, the festival will host a screening of shorts from 13 Japanese animators and puppeteers, including Keita Kurosaka, Kihachiro Kawamoto, Shintaro Kago, Shoji Goto, Atsushi Wada, Naoyuki Tsuji, Kei Ōyama, Daisuke Ichiba, and AX contributor Akino Kondoh.

Todd Brown, one of the organizers of the festival, said that "it was a pretty complicated process to obtain [Summer Wars] — we had to coordinate with companies in both the U.S. and Japan." The British anime distributor Manga Entertainment will release Summer Wars in September.
