Yamato Resurrection: Director's Cut BD/DVD Adds 30+ Minutes

posted on by Egan Loo

The previously revealed director's cut of the Yamato Resurrection anime film will add at least 30 minutes to the film and follow the late director Yoshinobu Nishizaki's originally conceived plan for the story. That includes the alternate ending that was only seen in public during a preview screening — where audience members saw both endings and voted on the ending used in the first theatrical print. The new edition also has never-before-seen scenes, re-cut scenes, and new dialogue recordings.

The director's cut will play in two theaters in Tokyo and Osaka from January 28 to February 3. Bandai Visual will then release this extended edition on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on March 23. Bandai Visual had announced that the first Blu-ray Disc and DVD release of Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection would have both endings, but then it delayed that earlier release and did not include both endings last year.

Assistant director Makoto Kobayashi is substituting for Nishizaki on the new edition. Nobuyoshi Habara and Tomonori Kogawa are also serving as animation directors in collaboration with the anime studio XEBEC.

The original 1974 anime (dubbed and partly rewritten in English as Star Blazers) recounted the voyages of the World War II battleship Yamato after it is resurrected in 2199 as a space-faring ship to fend off alien threats to Earth. Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection is set in the year 2220, 17 years after the battleship Yamato went down in the Sea of Aquarius. A rebuilt Yamato rises to save humanity and face an unprecedented threat.

A separate Space Battleship Yamato 2199 television anime series remake will have a theatrical preview screening of its first two episodes in April.
