The website AnimeBlurayUK reports that the website of the BBFC is now listing age-ratings for the first 1992 TV season of Sailor Moon. The episodes were classified on March 9.

In October 2024, Crunchyroll announced that Sailor Moon would be released on UK Blu-ray and DVD, but there have been no more announcements of a UK home release since then.

The BBFC gives individual ratings to each of the 46 episodes of the first season. Most of them are rated U or PG. Episodes 2, 9, 24, 26, 27, 33, 34, 45 and 46 are all rated 12.

Episode 4 of the series, called "Learn to Be Skinny With Usagi," is rated 15, which means that the season is rated 15 overall. The BBFC site describes the particular episode as follows:

Sexual violence and sexual threat - A boy admits to secretly taking photos of a woman at the gym.

Theme - Young teenage girls worry about their weight and desire to be skinny. They discuss weight loss, dieting and their appearance, with the belief that being slim will make them attractive. Characters are seen not eating, aggressively working out at a gym and are told they will be attractive if they lose weight.

Additional issues - There is a sexualised focus on the body of a female character and there are references to attraction between characters. Scenes of mild violence include characters being kicked and struck. A character is surrounded, chased and nearly struck by villainous characters but with a reassuring outcome.

The other episodes are described in similar detail on the site (click the "Content Advice" tab for each). The BBFC page also mentions nearly 18 minutes of bonus material.

Based on the manga by Naoko Takeuchi, Sailor Moon was adapted as a 200-part TV series in Japan, running from 1992 to 1997.

It was followed by a three-season reboot series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, running from 2014 to 2016. This was followed by a two-part film sequel, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal, in 2021, and then by a further two-part film, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos the Movie in 2023.
