In their author's note, Sansyoku Nerune says, “it's a concept that is a little difficult to understand and has a lot of nuance to it.”
Friends, I was to assure you that nothing in this comic is difficult or nuanced. This is a specific fantasy, drawn in a specific way to serve the needs of a specific audience. It is extremely clear what those needs are and who that audience is.
Female characters are given names, and they do look a little bit different, in a “type” kind of way. Here are the school chair types, the gal types, the introverted types, etc. But their bodies are mostly drawn the same, with slight variation, and their genitalia are almost identical. The men in these scenarios don't get the benefit of names. Or faces. They are merely penis-wielding mannequins, presumably standing in for the reader.
There's very little else to say about this book. Each scenario is functionally the same. A girl, some girls, any girl, is doing anything, and a male shape interrupts that to have sex. That is literally every story, and the only challenge is the machinations of how to interrupt that activity while it is in mid-action.
Sex while carrying books seems unchallenging; how about sex while in the middle of a volleyball game? Complicated, but not impossible, since “sex” here is primarily these male shapes thrusting themselves without preamble into the females. Only in one scenario do we see something like affection, but we are frequently assured that the female characters also enjoy this, because otherwise this would be a rape comic, and who wants that?
I'll definitely give props to the creator – they have drawn a lot. There are some skills on display, and a lot of work clearly went into the drawing of this manga, just not into the writing of it. I do wish a little effort had been put into making people of the male shapes, but I know that's not at all what this manga is about. I just kind of feel bad for a reader who is reduced to nothing more than a penis. It seems sad and reductive to me.

Sansyoku Nerune's Free Use Academy did not deliver the experience I expected, but I quite enjoyed my time with it nonetheless! While the “free use” kink inspires themes like dub con, embarrassment/humiliation, and hard exhibitionism, Free Use Academy uses this premise as more of a framing device. Rather than a deep dive into the “free use” kink, this doujin is instead a series of vignettes that follow a series of young women with different demeanors, personalities, and sexual proclivities performing sex acts in different, vaguely scholastic settings.
Free Use Academy works because Nerune goes to great lengths to make each character feel distinct, and the intercourse they have feel informed by their personalities. For instance, the athletic and people-pleasing Natsuki's tennis practice turned gangbang feels wildly different from the introverted otaku Nanako's hook-up turned relationship. It also helps that Nerune makes these character designs hyper legible, with their personalities and the tropes they fit into discernible at a glance. Sure, all of the characters focused on are archetypal, with each one fitting into common tropes like “bookish,” “gal,” or “apathetic,” but distinct enough from each other to come across as fresh and interesting.
While the lack of an overarching narrative makes it somewhat difficult to write about Free Use Academy at length, it's a really fun piece of smut that is as quirky and ridiculous as its premise would imply. It's not often that an adult doujin will make me chuckle or empathize with a character, but Nerune's scenario and character writing are strong enough to entertain as well as titillate. It feels far more like Nerune is creating characters that they enjoy and is placing them into situations that they find personally interesting, rather than writing for a presumed audience, and that makes Free Use Academy incredibly endearing.
If I had any major criticism of Free Use Academy, it's that it could have leaned a little harder into the tropes that each character is meant to embody. For as varied as the designs are, all of the featured characters fall into a busty vs non-busty body type and are all fairly unassuming within their waifu genres. Similarly, Chad O's translation is perfectly serviceable, but it would have been fun if a little more had been done to give each character more of a distinct voice. Even if Free Use Academy falls shy of being great, it's still really good, and I hope Nerune's future works feature ensemble casts or build further upon this roster of characters as they have a talent for this style of storytelling.

Do you like free use and public play? Well then this is the story for you! What I like about this book is how it really does try its best to cover the full public free use experience. The book is separated almost like an anthology, focusing on different girls who happened to attend this academy that just generally allows men to do whatever they want with them. There are girls who are quiet, there are girls who are outgoing, there are girls who take charge and there are others who just get dragged along for the ride. There are women who start off innocent, but then end up getting passed around and then there are some women who start off innocent only to find that special someone. This book really tries to check off every archetype it can use and I do have a lot of respect for that. While this does mean that some chapters might stimulate you more than others, it also means that you'll most likely latch onto at least one girl in the story.
Unfortunately, sometimes it might feel like the book is going for a more quantity over quality approach. Almost all of the guys are faceless drones, and while this slightly sketchy art style definitely helps punctuate certain elements of the women in positive ways, it really doesn't make any of the guys look that good by comparison. Even if the idea was that the men are supposed to be self inserts, that doesn't really help a lot when more than half of the sex scenes in this book are group sex or gangbangs. Personally, I wish there was a little bit more detail and quality that was put into that or, at the very least, I wish the story got as creative and out there with its settings as it did with the girls. I think it's very telling that my favorite chapter in the book was one of the only sex scenes that didn't take place at the actual school. Still, I do think this story nails the free use idea, from the chaotic mass of the guys participating to the girls quick willingness to please people like everything is normal. Give it a shot because chances are you'll come across at least one girl who tickles your fancy.
