Manga that are censored in North America Comment
Bokurano: Ours (manga) Viz Media's print of volume 2 censored an underage sex scene so nothing below the waist was seen.
Breath (manga) A flashback scene to an underage sexual encounter was removed from Yaoi Generation's print of volume 2, though the dialogue/text from said scene was still featured without images in the back of the book.
Close the Last Door (manga)
Descendants of Darkness (manga) Viz Media's print of volume 4 censors an oral sex scene by cropping the panel to remove a character's head and completely removing the associated sound effects.
Dragon Ball (manga) The censorship on both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z has been all over the place by Viz Media. After the initial controversy involving the series being sold at Toys R' Us and a parent accusing it of being "softcore porn", the Dragon Ball manga was censored to remove partial nudity and sexual situations. At least one print run was uncensored and carried a 13+ rating. The VIZBIG version of Dragon Ball is less censored, but still censors some female nudity and middle fingers. The "Dragon Ball Z" volumes were more heavily edited for violence and language to be in line with the television version of the series.
Flame of Recca (manga)
Fullmetal Alchemist (manga)
Ghost in the Shell (manga)
Godchild (manga)
Golden Cain (manga)
Hikaru no Go (manga)
Hunter × Hunter (manga) The Viz Media prints and digital version of volume 23 features small black bars partially obscuring some graphic violence, such as a decapitation and an impalement. (The act can still clearly be seen, but the gore cannot.)
I''s (manga) The Viz Media prints and digital version of volumes 1-11 censor illustrations of female nipples. Volumes 12-15 were published uncensored with stickers warning of mature content.
Initial D (manga) Tokyopop originally released volumes 1 and 2 uncensored with a 16+ rating, but as apart of their marketing plan for the series, these were later edited to a 13+ rating, with a sex scene in the initial print run removed from the first volume. Another sex scene was later edited, as well as some sexual situations/dialogue relating to a young girl's pimp/prostitute relationship with a man.
Midori's Days (manga) A scene of female nudity was censored in Viz Media's print of volume 7.
Monster Musume (manga) A minor bit of censorship that's not really on the fault of Seven Seas. The mangaka redid a "milking" scene in volume 8 to be less explicit for the tankōbon edition, and this is the version that Seven Seas received/published.
Naruto (manga) Several volumes of the Viz Media print/digital version have received minor edits for elements such as cigarettes, middle fingers, and a suggestive boy-on-boy Sexy Jutsu technique.
Parasyte (manga) The Tokyopop print of volume 1 changes a comedic image of a penis appearing on a man's arm to a snake. All other prints are fully uncensored.
Pokémon (manga) After the initial print run, "The Electric Tale of Pikachu" was heavily edited to remove any fanservice that was present in the original Japanese version, including cutting a scene of Misty in a hot springs entirely.
Pokémon Adventures (manga)
Reiko the Zombie Shop (manga) Dark Horse's print of volume 4 has female nudity censored by request of the mangaka, who said to Dark Horse "I know that American manga sells better if there isn't shrink-wrap on it, so please do what you need to do to not necessitate shrink-wrap."
Selfish Love (manga)
Sgt. Frog (manga)
Shadow Star (manga) A scene of sexual assault involving a young girl was censored in Dark Horse's print of volume 7.
Tenjo Tenge (manga) The CMX print of the series was heavily censored in early volumes to remove graphic violence, sexual situations, and nudity. Some later volumes of the series by CMX carried "mature content" stickers but still contained minor edits. The Viz Media print of the series is fully uncensored.
Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase (manga) The Tokyopop print of volume 4 was censored to remove female nipples from a bondage scene. After the controversy involving this edit, Tokyopop raised the rating of the series from 13+ to 16+ and no other edits were made.
Video Girl Ai (manga)
Zatch Bell (manga) Viz Media's prints of the series are censored for blood and nudity in the same way the anime was censored for television (despite being rated T to the anime's TV-Y7).
