I've updated some of the pictures and descriptions in my nominations.

Also voting for:

Guts, Berserk - Coincidentally I'm watching the series now for the first time.
Jin, Samurai Champloo
Porco Rosso, Porco Rosso
Alucard, Hellsing - I don't like the show but he deserves to be nominated.
Revy, Black Lagoon

VOTE FOR:
  • Zolf Kimblee ("F.M.A." franchise)
  • Kenpachi Zaraki ("Bleach" franchise)

NOMINATIONS:
Lelouch Lamperouge, Lulu & Lelouch vi Britannia
(in his "Zero" persona), Code Geass franchise pic#1 pic#2 pic#3
Kind of Cool: General Cool (well respected)
Why he's Cool: A number of reasons:
  1. He's articulate and, thus, is able to speak for the people to the Man.
  2. But he doesn't just speak to the Man, he tweaks the Man's nose (before breaking it).
  3. And he's able to get away with it.

Scar, FMA, FMA:B pic
Type of Cool: Bad-Ass
Why he's Cool:This one's actually quite the toss-up. Consider Exhibit "A": His demonstrated charisma. Whether it's just a few followers or the entire population of Liore, he has people willingly risking -- and laying down -- their lives for him because they believe in him THAT MUCH. but then there's Exhibit "B".....

His demonstrated Bad-Assery when taking out State-Certified Alchemists in the name of Ishbal, or when executing the final take-down of the Humnculus at the top of the chain, is extremely impressive. Extremely.

==========================================
nominations for Lelouch Lamporouge (as per Mister V), Roy Mustang (as per errinundra) & a certain young captain from Bleach to soon follow.....

Nominating
Tohofuhai/Undefeated of the East/Master Asia, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, pic 1, pic 2
Type of Cool: Bad-Ass, Master/Mentor, Martial arts master
Why he's bad-ass: Master Asia is one of the strongest characters in the G Gundam world, skill- and strength- wise. His title says otherwise. As the former King of Hearts (member of a secret organization that watches humanity from the shadows and will intervene to restore the balance between chaos and order), he can hold himself in a battle.

Why is Master Asia so bad-ass? There is the fact that he can easily destroy mobile suits with a piece of cloth. His first appearance of the series demonstrates his overall strength when taking down mobile suits on foot. The guy also makes purple work for him. Master Asia also proves that a martial artist's fighting spirit can be stronger than any form of technology.

Suzaku Kururugi, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and R2, pic
Type of Cool: Bad-Ass, Ace pilot
Why he's bad-ass: Though Suzaku may look frail, his combat capabilities do not reflect his physique. As one of the most skilled Knightmare Frame pilots in both series, he can be considered an one-man army. His presence alone on the battlefield strikes fear into his enemies. Demonstrated a few times, he is even capable of dodging machine gun fire from Knightmares on foot.

To add to his badassness, Suzaku even has his own internet meme, the "Suzaku kick" drawn from his signature spinning kick. He is also capable of using this in the Lancelot.

Kallen Kouzuki/Kallen Stadtfeld, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and R2, pic 1, pic 2
Type of Cool: Bad-Ass, Ace pilot
Why she's bad-ass: As the ace pilot of the Black Knights, Kallen is on par with other ace pilots including Suzaku. Her rise to fame is her personal Knightmare Frame, the Guren Mk-II. Throughout both series, she alone has killed many ace pilots of Britannia. Like Suzaku, she can considered a one-woman army in the Guren Mk-II.

The only person capable of fighting Kallen and living through it is Suzaku. Whereas Britannia has Suzaku, the Black Knights have Kallen. When the two battle, there can only be one outcome.

Genkai, Yu Yu Hakusho pic
Type: Badass
Why she's cool: Despite being an old woman, Genkai is a force to be reckoned with. She is know as a skilled fighter in both the human and demon realms. She enters the dark tournament with the main cast and easily takes out any fighters the other skilled fighters have the slightest trouble with. She mastered her signature more, the spirit wave, as a young woman and reverts to this form whenever she uses it.

Kurama, Yu Yu Hakusho pic
Type: General Cool
Why he's cool: It might seem a bit odd of me to call Kurama general cool when he's clearly an excellent fighter, however he always keeps his calm and uses skill and brain in greater proportion to his strength most times. Kurama is also one of the smartest kids in school and has an epic showdown against another one of the school's smartest kids in which violence is not allowed and still walks away with his calm and collected look.

Chouji Suitengu, Speed Grapher pic (from an old tourney I believe)
Type of Cool: I'm honestly not sure right now, could go either way though I'm leaning more towards general.
Why he's cool: Suitengu has received superpowers prior to the start of the series that allow him to use his blood as a weapon. However, despite being strong, he only fights when needed. Nevertheless, he has almost every rich, wealthy, and influential man in the city under his control, using his charisma to gain control of money and people's very lives. When he faces the main character, Saiga, a man who can blow things up by taking pictures of them, in a small battle in a blazing building, Suitengu throws him a briefcase of money as a form of payment for using a picture Saiga took previously and rather than fight to the end simply turns and walks away.

Here's a picture of Shigure Sohma. Not as good as the one for November 11 but it could work.

BTW - Voting for:

November 11 - Darker than Black because of that picture! Now that is being cool under pressure!

(And Dorcas_Aurelia: The Fonz from the TV series Happy Days is one of the coolest characters ever to appear on American TV, but he could also easily be considered blatantly sexist, too. When has that ever been a barrier to being cool?)

While I know of the character, I've never actually seen Happy Days, so I can't really agree or disagree with the statement, but I still hold that the sexism in addition to the other points I mentioned, particularly his hotheadedness and ego, make him an uncool badass.

This isn't who is the best role model contest, this is a cool contest. A lot of things that make someone cool are things that also make them bad role models downvoting a character because you disapprove of their moral code is just silly

Granted, which is why I haven't downvoted Kenpachi or Kimblee, but I'm not objecting to Dark Schneider (just) because he's sexist. That was actually an afterthought. When he goes to rescue Yoko and finds her stripped naked in Gaara's tower, he flips out because Gaara saw her naked first, not because the indignities he's forced upon her. DS is a huge [jerk].

nbahn could you find better pictures to use for Tomari from Kashimashi? I was so happy that someone else besides me thought of nominating her but the images you supplied are depressing and don't do her justice. She is cool, it goes without saying this is a Vote in Support for [Tomari Kurusu]. But she needs better pics (I couldn't find any good ones).

Can't believe I missed out on picking the tournament, but I might as well throw in a few nominations:

Kyouya Ootori, Ouran School Host Club pic
Type of cool: General Cool, Charmer, Intellectual, Affluent
Why he's cool: Sly, intelligent, and charming; Kyouya is a lady's man at heart who can woo fan girls effortlessly despite appearing somewhat aloof and uninterested. His mysterious persona adds to his overall coolness. Despite being in the background, Ootori runs the entire Host Club with merciless levels of precision and efficiency. Driven and accomplished, Kyouya is wealthy, competent, and well-connected making him a very appealing character.

Yang Wenli, Legend of the Galactic Heroes pic
Type of cool: General Cool, Strategist, Leader
Why he's cool: As a son of a merchant and a pacifist at heart, Yang Wenli makes an unlikely, but incredibly likable and effective military strategist and leader in the Free Planets Alliance. While not as magnificent as his rival, Reinhard, Yang makes up for it by being more level-headed, principled, down-to-earth, and far less arrogant and reckless. Yang is considered a hero of his people despite being very laid back, humble and almost slothful at times. Yang may not have an intimating and overpowering personality, but he can also be just as charismatic and persuasive when the situation calls for it. Yang's overall relaxed nature adds to his overall cool factor despite the fact that his seemingly effortless genius is envied by a few of his peers.

I'm too lazy to come up with writeups myself, but I'm seeing some very notable omissions here. Surely at least Ginko, Simon, Batou, Scar, Balalaika and Alex Rowe would deserve to be included?

Anyway, Voting for:
Alberto, Giant Robo (destined to win it all, mark my words!)
Alucard, Hellsing
Balsa, Moribito
Black Jack, Black Jack
Claire Stanfield, Baccano!
Edmond Dantes, Gankutsuou
Faye Valentine, Cowboy Bebop
Fee Carmichal, Planetes
Guts, Berserk
Izumi Curtis, FMA
Jin, Samurai Champloo
Kamina, Gurren Lagann
Kino, Kino's Journey
Motoko Kusanagi, GITS
Mugen, Samurai Champloo
Revy, Black Lagoon
Spike Spiegel, Cowboy Bebop
Taisou, Giant Robo
Master Asia, Mobile Fighter G Gundam

Also seeing some nominations I'm rather dubious about, but I'll refrain from voting against them on account of not seeing those series.

Oh, I certainly agree that Scar should be included, but then we have the issue of which FMA character loses out, as Riza Hawkeye, Zolf Kimblee, and Izumi Curtis all have multiple votes already. (And that's without bringing Roy Mustang into the picture, which someone probably will.) Simon I'm less confident deserves to be here, as he never quite exudes the self-confidence necessary to be considered truly cool. Someone will do Balalaika eventually, I'm sure, and the others are also at least worth considering.

BUT I'm going to concentrate on nominating a few other options:

Sesshomaru, Inuyasha franchise pic
Type of Cool: Either
Why He’s Cool: Few villains in anime have arrogance down to a science better than Sesshomaru. His cold, bishonen looks, tendency to regard most things as too trivial to be worth his concern, and calmness even in the face of powerful threats give him an aura of cool which attracts some loyal followers and his skill in combat has few equals within the series' setting.

Priss Asagiri, Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 pic
Type of Cool: General Cool
Why She’s Cool: Priss is the lead singer in a rock band, rides a souped-up motorcycle, lives in a trailer, and always dresses in a macho-sexy fashion. She's also the lead striker for the Knight Sabers, the all-female armored vigilante team at the center of the series and has a laid-back, "whatever," go-with-the-flow kind of attitude. Even the body language and hand gestures she uses when suited up are cool. (NOTE: I am specifically listing her under the TV series only because I feel that series plays up her "cool" aspects much better than the OVA series do.)

Uh, you did see episodes 11-27, didn't you? Wink And besides...

Kamina is cool, badass and all (as are Viral, Yoko and Lordgenome too), but IMHO Simon should without a doubt be the top pick for Gurren Lagann.

Heck, maybe I should just get off my ass (figuratively speaking) and do those writeups afterall...

What isn't cool about possessiveness and a sense of entitlement. I disagree that the scene you are talking about makes him look uncool, but even if it is an uncool moment does one fleeting moment of complete assitude completely undo his entire entity as a cool character? No, since neither of us can agree on weather that seen makes him look uncool or is just fine lets just table that issue and look at the rest of the anime. The women want him and the men want to be him, he has a charming bloated ego which always makes him the center of attention. Best of all he can back it all up with stupidly amazing power. But maybe the key ingredient that takes him from being just another bad-ass to the personification of cool he is, is his "I don't give a F%@K" attitude, he has no agenda, no mission, he is a rebel without a cause and one cool bastard.

Nominations:

I'm pretty sure that there is a 2 character limit per franchise, but I was struggling with which of these first 3 were best, so I went with all of them. We'll see if any stick. Also, consider all pictures placeholder images. I'll take screenshots tonight.

Kambei Shimada, Samurai 7 Pic
Type of Cool: Badass samurai
Why he's Cool: He is an extremely powerful samurai, but is content with wandering the streets and has no lust for power or glory. He's his own man and does what he sees fit. Notice a bumbling robot and wannabe samurai attempting to "diffuse" a hostage situation.? Pretend to be after the robot on a revenge quest, behead him, and rescue hostage. Notice a girl falling to her doom from a drainage pipe? Leap into the gorge and worry about gravity later. Fighting a clearly superior opponent? Put away your weapon and walk away, trusting that he won't cut you down. He always has a level head.

Kyuzo, Samurai 7 Pic
Type of Cool: Badass samurai
Why he's Cool: He's the most powerful of the bunch, speaks very little, and fights with twin blades (we all know that a sword is best, but two swords are better). He's one of those characters who joins the team so he can complete a duel with somebody, but ends up whole heartedly supporting the cause. He's steely eyed, and dispatches enemies acrobatically yet effortlessly.

Gorobei Katayama, Samurai 7 Pic
Type of Cool: General cool, charismatic showman
Why he's Cool: Though Kambei clearly the leader of the bunch, perhaps Gorobai is more charismatic. We meet him on the streets where he puts on a show by challenging people to fire an arrow at his head, which he then catches. He engages enemies in conversation during fights, and proposes wagers of skill. He also apparently has like 40 ranks of sense danger, as he is able to sense traps set for him, and intercept missiles fired from impossible ranges or complete concealment.

Ichiro Miyata, Fighting Spirit/Hajime no Ippo Pic (goddamn this show is great. It gave me chills when I was looking for this screen cap)
Type of Cool: General cool
Why he's Cool: Though Miyata does have his badass moments in the ring, such as devising a killer punch during a fight, he qualifies for this tournament based on what he does outside the ring. He's a stellar fighter, and he knows this, yet he does his work and training as diligently as a newcomer to the sport. He is supremely confident in his abilities. He brushes off rowdy fans as if they don't exist. He fights every fight at a disadvantage because he competes in a weight class lower than what suits him. Plus, he always walks around with his eyes closed and his hands in his pockets.
