In the anime encyclopedia page, Macross: Do You Remember Love? (movie), the link is still in bold, as it would be for anything that is licensed, however, since the original company that licensed it no longer exists, and the license is expired, it should be unbolded.

It's really that simple? I've tried doing research into the legal status of that movie and got very confused very quickly. Makes the Miracleman situation look straightforward. Of course, that means that it could very well be unliscensed and I just missed it...

Yep, it really is that easy. Take a look at the Anime or Manga in the encyclopedia, and any link that is in bold means that particular title has been licensed.

I was referring to the apparent simplicity of its legal status, as I'm quite familiar with the Encyclopedia.

Well didn't Macek have the NA rights for it?
Then he took those rights with him to Streamline Pictures, which went belly up. I suspect ADV may own the rights to it, since they have the rights to Robotech as well as Megazone 23 both titles Macek had rights to. |

Nope, ADV doesn't even own the rights to it, otherwise they would have already released it. It would also have stated so in the info for DYRL.

Did the license really expire? Is their any evidence that the license is dead? Just because the company went under doesn't necessarily mean the license is dead. It might be that the expired tag is wrong....

Well, then, who would have the rights? I mean, to who would you buy it, or to who would any TV Channel pay for airing it? Anyways, I've never seen hapening something like that, so I can't really help

Search on google for Best Video, you'll find more info on the company and the two titles it licensed (One title is pretty much still licensed, since Orion Pictures is still around)

No. Harmony Gold only has the rights to the original Macross series through Tatsunoko. They have nothing to do with the initial U.S. release of DYRL. |

The rights are in limbo, but we don't know for sure where they're held. An investor for Best Video might have the rights, or they might've been auctioned off to some 3rd party, or they might've defaulted back to the Japanese production company (or some other company). Unfortunately, we don't know for certain other than it _had_ been licensed.. it'd require a bit of legwork to find out what happened (and when!) to the licenses. To sorta address the other issues... the encyclopedia doesn't make a distinction between current licenses and expired licenses.. if it's got a "licensed by" entry, it's bold. if it doesn't, it's not. |
