"Sony's previous portable gaming unit, the PSP, was region-locked" No it wasn't, dunno where you got that idea.

The UMD movie discs were, but not UMD games. I guess if you have a Go it *kinda* is as it can only be associated with one PSN account.

Also, this was confirmed back in June that the Vita would be region free. A simple Google search could have verified that...

Worldwide Studios Vice-President Michael Denny said in June that it would be "as far as he knew." However, Yoshida is the first to simply say, "Yes, it is."

The PSP did have region-coding, even though only one UMD game (as opposed to movies) used it to lock out regions.

Also, for the DSi and 3DS, region locking is completely optional. My Japanese Pokemon White is region locked, but my US Pokemon Black is not.

Glad to hear this is the case when I continue to buy Japanese PSV games for their limited edition figma offerings. Very Happy

Awesome to have this confirmed. Having access to Japanese games is a big plus. There's a lot of great stuff that never gets out here. And with the PSV getting more traction over in Japan (from what I can tell mind you), that means a lot of games that may never see the light of day here.

This is great news and definitely increases my chances of getting a Vita sooner than later! Thanks, Sony.

Looks like this is going to be a major win for Sony. Vita is going to have a lot of launch games for people to pick up. I'm excited to hear Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Bioshock for the Vita, and Resistance: Burning Sky. I'm really excited that other games like Disgaea 3, ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Tales of Innocence R is coming to the Vita. There's plenty of game out there that people can buy on Vita.

Brilliant! That means I can import Persona 4 from America instead of having to wait 6+ months for it to get here in the UK Very Happy

The 3DS isn't region free though? I thought it was... best re-advise my friend on that Professor Layton game she's been eyeing up since for some stupid reason they won't release London Life here in the UK.
