As of late, I've been in a bit of a rut when it comes to receiving anime off Amazon.com sellers when it comes to two cases.

First, I ordered a SAVE edition of the complete Utawareumono series back in late-September yet it appears the set's been lost in the mail judging from the fact there hasn't been any updates for my tracking of the set since last month. I nagged the seller for a refund, but they insisted I should either wait it out (which I've done enough of over the past month) or issue a resend of a new copy. Right now, I'm waiting to hear back from them regarding getting another copy of the set.

For my second case, I ordered a SAVE edition of the complete Pani Poni Dash series. Upon getting it in the mail yesterday, I discovered that I received two copies of the fourth disc in the set and lacking the third disc all together. I sent an e-mail to the seller requesting if I could get a complete set of the series with the proper third disc and if I could return the one I received in error, which I'm also waiting to hear feedback on.

Has anyone else had their own personal issues when it comes to getting anime from online?

When buying from third parties on Amazon (from sellers other than shawnek, let's say), my problem rate is significant. Maybe something up to a fifth of transactions (not including loose discs, which are an unavoidable risk when shipping sealed DVDs).
The worst are those who advertise their wares under the listing for the genuine article, and when it comes it's a boot. Evil or Very Mad
No, actually, the worst are those who just never send anything. You let the full time allowable for delivery expire, and then you contact them, and they don't write back, and then you contact Amazon... And all that time you were looking forward to the (possible rare) thing you ordered, and not taking advantage of other options to buy, thinking your copy was on the way. Crying or Very sad

Do you check on the seller feedback and number of ratings received for the seller? I normally don't bother buying off Amazon sellers unless they have at least 1,000 ratings and feedback is at least 95% positive.

Normally I do, and I do find that the ratings are a good predictor of the experience you have. (Though sometimes I've been tempted to go with a new seller, in the case of an especially rare deal, and been disappointed!)
Even a great stats aren't a guarantee. I've received a boot last year from a seller who (as I remember it) looked good. It turned out the seller was buying blind from another party whom they (for some reason) trusted, and the item never passed through the hands of the seller I was paying.
I find it's all a bit of a gamble except for the few sellers you get to know.

I ALWAYS check the ratings of 3rd party sellers on amazon and if they don't have at least 100 reviews with a 95% satisfaction rate I just ignore them. So far, I haven't had any problems but I've only bought from 3rd party sellers through Amazon 3 times so I don't have too much experience.

Just be careful when not ordering directly from big, reliable names like rightstuf or Amazon.

I did have this one time where I ordered something, and it said it had arrived, yet I waited like 2 weeks and nothing. Turns out it might have been stollen, or lost. So I cancelled the order, and re-ordered and then I got it.

This was when I was living kind of way out in the woods, and did not have a decent mail person/mail box for security.

Other than that, no other problems. Of course I do usually just order direct from Amazon, or similar places (no third party unless they are rated really high & have an actual store/website).

Not getting something is usually not the problem for me. I will usually always get something....though it's not always the right thing I ordered. Numerous times I've received the wrong volume in the series or an outright bootleg. On the other hand I've also had a lot of good experiences with 3rd party sellers too who shipped very fast and sold stuff reasonably. The easiest way to get a successful online transaction though, is to avoid 3rd party sellers all together.

Although you know, if you buy something from me on Ebay, you will get it, exactly as described, cheaply and fast. I also wouldn't sell anything I don't have, and if you emailed me I probably would respond the same day. Not all sellers are out to screw you over, some of us are pretty responsible.

I occasionally have issues, but it seems like more lately. When it happens its they never shipped it or I never received it issue and this is from sellers that have sold in the thousands on amazon with 96%+ ratings. I suspect that sometimes its that they may have inventory tracking issues, that is their listings or inventory database (if they have one) haven't been updated with latest info. I really hate when I inquire, after not having received any info from them on shipping after a week, and they immediately cancel my order and refund it. Then I have to start the whole process of buying another copy again.

However, I've also had some good experiences with some individual sellers that ship the same day the order is placed. If I had to put a percentage to it I'd say probably 85-90% good experience 10-15% not so good.

The fact that Amazon is there backing things means that I will take a risk sometimes on Amazon, by for example buying from a new third party seller. I feel "What's the worst that could happen?"

Alright, I have had credit card info stolen and used, but have no proof how that happened. But, if you keep on top of Amazon orders, knowing exactly what you want and emailing sellers to clarify anything that might otherwise be your fault, and file claims immediately, and check your credit card statements carefully and inform the bank of anything dodgy, what's the worst that could happen? Very Happy

That's really annoying. But not as annoying as when they don't reply to your repeated enquiries, and you wait for the whole however many weeks to elapse before they cancel without a word.

I had something like that happen one time, I think it was close to 3 weeks and amazon actually sent me an email informing me that the seller had yet to ship and that I should consider contacting the seller. When I did the seller did the whole refund without explanation thing. What really bugged me though was that I couldn't leave feedback and complain about this. I guess unless they actually list as shipped you can't leave feedback?

I have never had a problem with a 3rd party retailer on Amazon, and I have ordered probably a dozen or more titles that way over the past couple of years. Sold a few that way, too.

I have had problems with eBay, and so don't even look there unless I'm desperate. Once I got a very well-made bootleg, while another time I got a crappy, burned-on-a-laptop bootleg. I reported it immediately, but the seller - despite a supposed 95% rating for hundreds of transactions - was already nowhere to be found. Rolling Eyes

Like some here, I've never had a problem with any online retailer that I've ever used. Amazon always does their job, obviously, and so do places like rightstuf. However, I think that the issue here is the third party sellers on Amazon.

Typically, I look for who has the lowest price. I will ONLY purchase the product if they have MANY (like hundreds) of positive reviews and the positive reviews are in the 95+ percentile. This ensures that there really isn't anyway that it can be screwed up. Granted, there are freak accidents that happen when mail travels hundreds of miles in a few days, but I personally have never had a problem.

Here are GOOD 3rd party retailers on Amazon that have large stores and that I have ordered from several times without any issues at all:

blowitoutahere - I've spent several hundred dollars in this guys store, everything has been timely and neatly packages. No complaints at all. One of my main go-to places.

icydeals - ordered a few things, always came very timely and in order.

-importcds - not as fast as some of the others, but always neatly packaged and has fairly cheap prices on most things!

Standing Ovation - i've only ordered 2 things from them, but it came neatly packaged and very quickly

Overall, I usually end up buying from blowitoutahere if they have the product that I am looking for. Flawless service.

Also, just a note:
Eddy Prawiro - I ordered a wall scroll from this guy. I ordered it on Wed and just to be very courteous he decided to express ship it at no extra cost to me so that I got it Friday instead of waiting until the next week! I'm interested to buy from him again.

That's the seller who I bought the Pani Poni Dash set off from last week. I usually order from them and I often get discs from them fairly fast. This is the first case I've had with them where there was an error in one of the discs delivered in the set.

I typically stick to major retailers or Amazon themselves, but 3rd party I actually prefer e-bay. I know there are many horror stories about it and I've had a few, but my rule now is before I spend a decent amount of money on anything there I must first have A) UPC #'s off the box (sure they can just tell you the right one, but this will weed out a lot of those who realize they will get a complaint as soon as it shows up, and also those "I don't really know much about this stuff" sellers) and B) a correspondence with the seller before bidding where they send an actual photo or two of the product sitting on a table or something like that no stock photos. Since I have made these buying requirements I've had good results so far.
