I got the May 2005 issue of Shonen Jump in the mail today...and boy was it thin! They even had the audacity to put on the cover "over 260 pages of manga!" That's about 70 less than usual.

Does anyone know if SJ plans to put in something new later on?
The next issue doesn't have anything new other than a preview of I's. SJ is looking more and more like a glorified advertisment for Sj properties rather than an anthology.
I just don't know how they can charge the same for much less.
Sure they want to make money. but c'mon.

No, it isn't "official". You can't expect Viz to replace DBZ only a month after they took it out. What are they going to do, just suddenly put a manga that is being released on a set schedule in Shonen Jump with no prior notice? They're going to want to consider which one of their new licences (or prospective licences) would fit into Shonen Jump the best. Just because they didn't immediatally replace the series within a month doesn't mean they aren't going to. Give it time.

I have to say that 260 pages for the same price is a complete [expletive] rip off. They have no excuse for not, at the very least, giving each title an extra chapter.

That's what I THOUGHT they were going to do. Sad I wonder why they didn't do that...

kagemusha, yeah I totally agree with you. I guess I was upset I felt ripped off. I actually at least expected them to give us 3 chapters for a couple of the series as others have said. It's too bad. Oh well Confused

Since Kenshin is a hot seller, I thought they would replace DBZ with it. Oh well, I'm sure they replace it with another series soon enough.

I doubt they would consider that. Kenshin's selling so well in TPB format that to put it in SJ (thus slowing down the rate at which the TPBs are published, thus slowing down the rate at whch Viz makes money) wouldn't be a wise idea. I would think that they would want to launch a new property.

I doubt they'll replace it with anything.

I really don't think they will replace Dragon Ball Z with something else. Remember, when Hikaru No Go replaced Sandland, they had the new manga in the very next issue. With Dragon Ball Z, they didn't even have a page saying, "Coming in a future issue..." Things aren't looking good. What I want to know is, why did they take out DBZ in the first place? They didn't even give any warning. Shonen Jump is getting pretty bad about suddenly changing things around.

Reasonable Speculation: Without the DBZ Anime on CN (and replaced by the much more HORRIBLE DBGT), why continue with such a presence?? Yu-Gi-Oh and One Piece would be considered enough draws to continue on with the Manga-zine since both are on TV.

Case in point: Rurouni Kenshi got cut from CN a while back, and the Manga followed suit.

If you mean it got dropped from Jump, well, it was never in Jump in the first place.

Also, I doubt DBZ is going to be replaced by anything. Wouldn't they have it already lined up and ready to go if that were the case?

Kenshin was in Jump, but only as a preview. And Viz probably took DBZ out of Jump for a number of possible reasons: 1)People were buying the magazine instead of the tankoubon. 2)Tankoubon sales were the same as they always were, and didn't attract a larger base through Jump. 3)Sales for DB-related merchandise have declined in general, due to overexposure, which might explain some of the price drops on the part of FUNimation. Anyway, DBZ will probably be replaced by a manga Viz thinks will attract more readers, or a manga which might not do as well outside of the magazine.

Oh yeah, and other than the cheaper ink, I have no problem with the mag. Kudos to Viz for also promoting something educational such as the Tut exhibit.
