I'm not sure if I'm the only one that feels this way but has anybody noticed how much the titles of certain anime series' episodes gives away the episode too much. My perfect example is Naruto, the titles of some episodes in Naruto are ridiculously revealing, they basically give away the ending, either they should put the title in a spoiler spoiler[because everyone at ANN is obsessed with spoilers] or just not have episode names but instead just numbers. Another one is Haibane-Renmei, okay, maybe not REVEALING but too long!

But my main point is Naruto, I mean today I watched episode 46 today and the titles is (I'll put this in a spoiler because it gave away the whole ending to me spoiler[Hinata Blushes! The Crowd Opens Their Mouths Wide, Naruto's Trump Card]. Does anybody else have any other series where the title gives HEAPS away or generally agree or disagree with me?

It's just how it's been for a long time. Also notice how next-ep previews can pretty much spoil the big super secret thing about the next episode. Just how it's been.

Good topic, You should try watching Samauri Shamploo, there are no next episode prievews, and the titals are written so oddley that there hard to read, Its great.

Sometimes episode titles seem too informative, then it turns out they are clever pieces of disinformation. In other words it's clear what the episode will be about but the title leaves room for twists.

To pick an example, the Yamato Nadeshiko Cup story arc in Tenshi na Konamaiki turned out completely different from what I expected. I was thinking of a silly competition and instead got some of the funniest and most dramatic episodes in the series.

I don't even watch the previews of the next episodes cause it ruins the next episode and the supense of waitin to see what happens next. I spend more time watchin the episode then the title so titles don't really matter to me >.<

I only watch previews when the series is airing in japan and I'm only able to watch it once a week through fansubs. However, when I have a series compilation (like watching the eps straight through one-by-one on dvd), I skip the previews.

Yes I've seen all of Samurai Champloo and I can never read the titles which is why i didn't bring it up. I need a translation for the translation, I guess the Japanese designer for the titles thought that it was easy to read in english letters all fancied up but really....

And yes I watch fansubs more than DVDs too so I rarely watch to the end to see the previews on the DVDs as well. But when I do watch them I regret it because unlike American soap opera tv commercials the anime previews are still IN context when they show all the action parts which is more annoying than all the good bits being taken out of context to look special (e.g. The O.C!!!)

Zac gave a nice answer to that question a couple of years back:

Zac Bertschy wrote:
OK, here’s the thing. The Japanese prefer to know the major plot points ahead of time so they can enjoy the episode more the first time they view it. This is similar to the French phenomenon where many French moviegoers watch the end of the film before the beginning so they can adequately take in and analyze the film without being concerned or excited about the ending. They already know what happens, so they can concentrate on the depth of the entire film. The Japanese are much the same way; witness some of the episode titles for Rurouni Kenshin. “The Sakaba sword breaks! Kenshin’s in trouble!”. Obviously this gives away a major plot point in the upcoming episode, but the concept of ‘spoilers’ doesn’t really exist in Japan and France, at least for the majority of film consumers. They already know Kenshin’s sword breaks, so they can concentrate on what happens in the rest of the episode, and pay attention to the various and sundry subtleties. It’s a different culture with different customs.

Personally, in the days before Internet hypersensitivity about "spoilers", I had the endings to many a classic film spoiled for me through pop culture, to the point that, with some films, the spoiler is the main point of reference, but I still enjoyed them. In fact, there are some films (i.e. Soylent Green) that I probably would never have bothered to watch if I didn't already know the spoiler.

My favorite example of this is actually in Dragonball Z where (I have no idea why I need to do this but just to be safe) spoiler[Goku stays on Namek while it blows up. Everyone thinks he died and in the preview the narrarator asks the suspensful questions like "Is Goku really dead?" or something to that effect and then when it says find out in the next episode we see the ep. title which is "Goku's Alive!"]

I'm sure there are many other classic examples. But so far that's my personal favorite. I personally find it amusing.

If this is a spoiler revealing anime episode title thread. Then Sailor Moon is a PERFECT example of spoilers in the title. Excellent examples of spoiler episode titles in Sailor Moon Stars include spoiler["Princess Kakyou Dies: Galaxia on Earth"] and spoiler["The disappearing stars! The death of Uranus and Neptune"].

Way too much spoilers in just the name of the episode. -_-

Umm, this has been going on for ages. Take G Gundam, where you'd have titles like "Stand Up, Domon! Rise of the Dark Gundam" and stuff like that. That's why when I watched the Trigun dub I found it refreshing that the titles were either one word or vague until you made the connection to the episode (for instance, watch tonight's episode entitled "Alternative").
