By all appearances to what I see at Rightstuf, UMD discs do have both Japanese audio /w subtitles, and English audio, and contain only 2 episodes.

Gungrave and Samurai Champloo have 2 episodes per disc, Hellsing has 3 episodes (at $11.24 for each UMD) - currently only the 1st volumes have been released along with Appleseed (at $14.99).

It looks like sample disc that NewType hands out, execpt half the cost of a standard DVD, that you have have to buy the $250 PSP to view them. I have to agree with Leo Laporte on TWiT, I hope they open rental places in like airports or car rental places so I can just rent them, instead of buying them. Heck, I would just buy the DVD, rip the video, put on a flash disc, and be on my way.

Yeah, I believe that when Bandai announced their UMDs they were the only ones that won't have the Japanese language option on them...

On a side note, I have to agree with Ataru, I do own a PSP however unless some place like Blockbuster starts renting out PSP Movies I wouldn't waste my money, especially since some of the movies are as much or more than their DVD versions

I believe Bandai is doing a bad thing by not having Japanese audio and subtitles on them like Geneon does.

My understanding of UMD media is that the video is of a much lower quality than what you would find on a DVD or broadcast television. Since the PSP has a smaller screen that is constant, the video doesn't have to be high quality to allow for a range of video display sizes.

I like how the UMD releases are very cheap; it makes me want to buy a PSP. Is there any way to hook up your PSP screen to a TV? If so this could be an affordable way to get series, I just wonder how poor the quality would look on a bigger screen.

I didn't see any video outputs on the PSP, all there is for outputs is the headphone jack.

Well, we'll have to see how final pricing ends up. Problem is, just like everyone complained about how the original plans for Gantz was 2 eps per disc and 13 DVDs, look at what you will be getting with UMD. (and at just about the same price as Gantz if you buy smartly)

It makes you want to spend $250 to watch anime on a 4.3 inch screen?

Not that I am aware of. On top of that, PSP screen resolution is about 1/4 of a full-size 16:9 widescreen. (which companies take full advantage of to fit everything onto 1.8 gigs of space)

Well, the video is DVD quality, so it doesn't look awful like the GBA Videos, but since all the movies are in widescreen and the PSP has such a small screen it makes things look like they have a lower quality due to being crammed into a small space

Don't forget about the USB port

Err, I mean in terms of the data quality (I'm a programmer by trade, so sometimes I use the wrong terms in some environments), it's true that the PSP has DVD quality video, but it is scaled to the PSP screen. In short there is no need to describe the full amount of detail that you can see on a TV when you can scale to down to exactly what you need for your target screen. This is the same principal as to why an AMV can look extremely good encoded at 640x480 on a 640x480 resolution monitor, but when you bump the monitors resolution up to 1024x786 it loses the quality it had - the video may be DVD quality at the smaller size, but it doesn't scale that up because there is information missing.

I won't be surprise if Sony pulls a Ninintendo and put a UMD drive on the PS 3 at some point. They already have a SD and Flash Card slots on it, so why not put something like that on the upcoming system.

Not at the moment, but if you're willing to wait a few months, both the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 have PSP connectivity, so maybe you can watch the UMDs that way.
