After Reading the success stories coming out of Kickstarter , just today Double Fine look to be well on their way to their target, it makes me wonder should Some of the Big Anime Licensees consider it with some of the riskier licenses that fans clamour for.

The first one of question is something like 'Legend of Galactic Heroes' which under this scheme im still unsure if it would be viable as i doubt they would be able to raise even half enough. Especially since most of those fans would now want the Blu Rays for this series.

But something like Card Captor Sakura getting picked up again, it might be something worth considering.

Other things like short OVA's and Movies would also be very good for consideration of Kickstarter.

Any old series from the pre 00's would also be good.

I personally think trying is a win win for the company. Cause even through Failure they can say they tried and that is something that Fans appreciate.

What do you Guys and Gals think?

I'd rather spend money making new anime rather than licensing old stuff we've already seen.

The people who make anime are different from the people who license anime.

With the way Kickstarter works it would be a public relations nightmare for big distributor to use such a service to raise money for a license.

IDK about a manga being licensed. I was framed my comment based on what you said about big anime distributors needing to use this service.

Yeah, DMP did a Kickstarter project for Tezuka's Barbara manga: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digitalmanga/publish-osamu-tezukas-barbara-in-english

I think that there definitely is potential in using this idea for other titles, both manga and anime, but I'm not sure if it's something we'll be seeing anytime soon. But I hope it will be.

The point would be those who make the anime wouldn't need the distributor. Even better: they retain the licenses and, if successful, receives 100% of all revenue.

As for the topic: Hell yes. End of discussion. Wink

A few indie comics as well. As I have taken part in a few of those.

The problem is that anime would basically be nearly impossible to fund through kickstarter. You would already have to be well knonw (Tim Schaefer created several popular games in the 90's as well as Psychonauts) to get the big bucks. No one is going to give you the funds for a multimillion dollar production just because you posted a few concept art.

But the discussion isn't about making anime through kickstarter funding, it's about licensing it, which is exactly what DMP has done with their recent Tezuka manga licenses. The shows already exist, they just need to raise the money needed for translating and all the other things that must be done to produce a R1 DVD release.

There is nothing you post I will ever trust.

You should be ashamed of yourself for being this ignorant.

I was responding to Mesonoxian Eve, which was about how now studios can simply go to kickstarter and simply raise money there.

For Licensing than yeah you can ask for it, I have no problem with what DMP is doing. Now I don't know how much you can make but I can easily see other companies jumping on it, trying to raise money. With Kickstarter you have tiers that include prizes, so for say a thousand dollars you get your name in the credits, in addition to getting the manga. Are you getting any revenue from it? No, but your giving money to make sure a product is brought over.

I would only have probems if it was some scam where you don't give people what you claim to be offering.

Well yeah, that pretty much goes without saying. I don't know too much about Kickstarter really so I don't know if they have anything in place to prevent that. However, I think at least in the beginning any company using this for anime/manga would have to be one that is already established, like DMP, so that potential supporters would feel confident that their money is going to be used to create a product they will like.
