Wasn't sure to put it here or in Bugs, but I figured to put it here, since it was specifically the encyclopedia search, and it probably has something to do with the coding in the Encyclopedia.

When you search for a name (firstname lastname), the results you get back are anyone who has firstname and anyone who has lastname in their names, with the "perfect matches" (both) at the top.

Searching for an anime/manga title, apparently, does not work the same.

I caught a clip of Aquarion Evol just now, and I thought I'd heard Hoshi Souichiro's voice in it. So I decided to search, to see if he was in it, or if I'd misheard. Not knowing the correct spelling, I searched for "Aquarian Evol." Now, if this were treated like a name search, I would have gotten everything with "Aquarian" in it, and everything with "Evol" in it, which would have gotten me to the right place. Instead, my only results were for Aquarian Age. When I took the "Aquarian" off and searched only for "Evol", Aquarion Evol was at the top of my search, followed by any other anime/manga or person's name that included the letters "evol".

What I'm wondering, is why the search will pull up "either word" results when it's a person's name, but not if it's a series title, since it's the same search (I use the firefox search bar).

On a similar note, when I'm searching for names, why is it that if there are special characters involved, a name like "Tōji" won't come up as a close match if I search for "Toji"? Many names I've searched for, not knowing it was written with special characters, are buried way down in the results, because the search engine doesn't read them as even being alternate characters.

I've been meaning to ask this question myself for ages, but have never gotten around to it. I'd like to know the answer too.

name search for "Toji" returns 18 hits, of which #5 = Tōji Satō.
name search for "Toji Sato" returns Tōji Satō as the first result.

For technical background about what's equivalent and what's not, see Dan42's enlightening posting.

"Toji" was just the first name I could think of that can be written with or without the special character, that wasn't actually a search I'd done. I don't remember what the search was, but it had tons of results (like, at least 50).
