I would be very interested to get the opinions of the staff here, as well as any others you think might be a well-qualified as yourselves, on the best performances in dubbing for a series or OVA. It could be like an Academy Awards, divided into pre- and post-millenium years, up through the end of last year. You could have technical/script categories in addition to VA performances.
I believe that this could serve to educate those of us still learning about anime, in addition to being fun for you guys, and it would certainly set off a lot of comments/opinions from us as well (and maybe some of you). An ideal would be if the review writers would submit short reports containing their individual picks and why they were chosen. I think that many of us here, if not most, would love to read these. |

Check here and you'll see my picks, with explanations, for the best voice acting jobs of 2005. I will probably do something like that at the end of 2006, too.
I'd be hesitant to do any kind of All-Time Best breakdown because it would be more certain to miss some quality performances. I think year-by-year bits are better. |

Geez, I missed your 2005 picks article, along with all of Part 2, I guess. I didn't know there was going to be a part 2 to the year in review. The time I was actually most interested in for the awards idea was the 90's, primarily the late 90's, approximately from Eva onward. You had Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, etc.- shows which introduced so many people to anime in part because they had dubs good enough to engage the viewer. Also, when reading the excellent reviews here, the dub grades often confuse me. In your review, for example, you gave Fumuffu the award. I haven't seen it, but I recented acquired MFP!, and found its dub to be disappointing, especially Luci Christian's performance. After having watched all the MFP series via fansubs, I kept finding myself begging her to emote like the Japanese VA. It seemed to me that she just kind of mailed it in. Allen Divers, who reviewed the first DVD of FMP!, gave the dub an A, and I really don't understand why, especially with the low dub marks commonly given here to otherwise fine series. |

Not only that, but then people would complain, and then you might end up being the not-so-favorite staff member. All time doesn't really work out because there's thousands of different series, and you have to choose only a small number out of those thousands. |

Although I agree the titles you mentioned all had excellent (and perhaps industry-defining) dubs, it would be a stretch to say any of those titles became popular in the States specifically because of engaging dubs. Cowboy Bebop and Trigun both have the kind of "lone wolf" mentality which typically appeals to Americans much more than Japanese, which is probably the major reason why both series have greater enduring popularity in the States than they do in Japan. And NGE is, well, NGE.
Really? I've always loved Luci Christian as Kaname. Fumoffu's dub has, from what I've seen, been widely-recognized as a very good dub by most reviewers. Beyond the first volume it's as close to the subtitles as you'll ever see an English dub and the voices and performances match up very well except for Sousuke, where I feel Chris Patton's deadpan is a distinct improvement over the too-deep voice of the original seiyuu. Whether or not the dub would stand up to the best ensemble efforts of other years is another story, but from top to bottom it had less flaws than anything else last year except perhaps Fullmetal Alchemist. That you disagree with me on that point is certainly fine; different people hear different things. I personally think Tiffany Grant's performance as Asuka in NGE is one of the all-time-great female vocals in anime dubs, but there are others who hate the NGE dub specifically because of that performance. Thanks for replying, Key. Given your views on Tiffany's preformance in Eva, I wonder how you feel about Bridget Hoffman's prefromance as Miaka in Fushigi Yuugi, since both roles have a lot of melodrama and could be accused of over-acting? I think Tiffany's performance was great, and I also feel that Bridget played the role the only way it could be played, given the character's personality and the way the show was directed. However, everyone who reviewed the show here, which I think was about everyone but you, hated her performance. (They also bashed Wendee Lee's Yui, which really made me go "Whoa".) |
