I just finished watching the last volume of Samurai 7, and simply all I have to say that it was probably my favorite anime this year. I thought the story was perfectly paced and the character development was amazing to say the least. The ending wasn't to sad but nevertheless was a tragic ending especially whenKyuzo was accidentally killed by Katsushiro gun malfunction What are your thoughts on Samurai 7?

I really enjoyed the whole series. I felt it had high production values and the action was top notch. Me and my friends (friends that dont care for anime) loved it.
Did you notice some episodes where the animation quality went crap? Like in some of the dialogue episodes the characters lost structure and shape shifted... mainly the Firefly episode. Where they trying to economize some episodes for budget/time?
*edit* I was pretty sure the gun worked, he just shot through the enemy without thinking what was on the other side. I kind of wanted my Kambe/Kyuzo fight...

I too was pleased by the last volume of the series. Funimation did an excelent job with it's R1 release. I love how most of the menu screens have long audio tracks on them, instead of the standard few second loop. The booklets included are really amazing. I can't understand why anyone would think about buying a bootleg of a Funimation release.
The boxes, which take up half a shelf, are gorgeous. The obi on my first box was torn a couple months ago, and I'm debating on throwing the obis on 2-7 away. Do people keep them? The ones on my Meison Ikkoku boxes are also getting a bit ratty from shelving. I just threw out the resealable wraps on the Honneamise Patlabor boxes too.
Samurai 7 is up there with Last Exile for my favorite Gonzo release. I'm one of those who is actually fence sitting on Gankutsuou. I love the fact that there newer titles are all 16:9 and look great on a big screen. The 5.1 DD mix is also solid. I'm glad that the company is utilizing current technology, unlike Bones who seem to be resisting new tech for some reason.

This statement is kind of... ignorant, cause I have seen only so much anime, but Samurai 7 has to be the best Surround Sound mix for an anime. It was loud and it seemed to use its own mix of sound effects. I mean, it had good sound throughout the entire series (some of the music got old).
I'd say best Surround Sound animes that I HAVE SEEN are...
(1) Samurai 7
(2) Spriggan
(3) Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (Skywalker Sound has a huge pair of nuts)
(4) Steamboy
(5) Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie
Like I said, my range of viewing anime is small... Cowboy Bebop isn't on that list because I have only heard it in 2.0 due to my set that I purchased. I also don't own any of Champloo on DVD yet cause there was suppose to be a box set coming out on July 4th... but I guess that pooped. There are a lot of DVD's I need to buy, but with my Dolby Digital/DTS system I have now, those animes so far sound great.
Anybody else think of any anime besides these with great sound production values?
*edit* Randall Miyashiro, I'd love to answer your question but I am ashamed that I don't know what boxes you speak of.

I would rank Samurai 7 up there with Stand Alone Complex and the new Bebop 5.1 for actual mixing. They are all solid mixes that don't go over the top. The audio mix on the Elfen Leid 5.1 is (as mentioned on the review) outstanding and might be the best. I'm also a fan of the Gungrave DTS track which really goes crazy on the LFE, and gunshots from all speakers. The other really nice 5.1 is the EVA Platnums which goes crazy as far as ambient sound and operator off screen voices. The Samurai Champloo DTS, while not as dramatic as the Gunrave uses lots of horizontal panning with character voices, which is an interesting aesthetic choice.

Hey what are your thoughts on the Akira sound mixes? I don't know if I am crazy, but the sound in the Metalic case set really sucked IMO. But I got the Japanese DTS version which also had DD 5.1 English, and call me crazy by the DD 5.1 English seemed a tad bit louder in certain parts than the Metalic case. Granted my Surround Sound is a real PoS cause I dont have a place of my own to get a bigger one. I liked the Japanese DTS though, it was really loud. Thoughts on the Akira sound mixes?
