Dictionaries go through multiple editions and edits after the previous dictionary. So, who nows. Things might change. Nothing to get your panties in a bunch just cause the dictionary "gives anime a bad name as a whole."

Fans do worse towards anime, than a mere dictionary.

I seriously doubt it, otherwise you wouldn't have said-

I'm sorry, is there something funny about what I said?

Even someone as stupid as yourself would've realised Sarcasm is a form of humour. Therefore, saying 'Is there something funny about what I said?" and then saying "HEH ITS A JOKE ITS FUNNY UR DUMB Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil " just shows that you;ve got no idea where you're going with anything.

When I said that I was talking about the Hello Kitty and Di Gi Charat thing. Evil or Very Mad

Oh, he's probably done with FUNimation and will start on Geneon or ADV soon enough. I don't know what pun will it be though.

I'm just building the bunkers for the day; you know, 70's survivalists-style.

Now, to make the topic something discussable: I don't believe the American Heritage Dictionary presents an absolute, definitive explanation of complex stuff in a few phrases. That is not their intent; not their use.

It certainly serves a purpose in giving the general guidelines for further research into a subject. What do you think is the definition of, say, "Caesar?" Would that short definition be in any way capable of expounding upon the complexities of the various symbolisms and representations of the word (thus adapted by the likes of the "Tsars," a [made-up word] Russification of "Caesar), or that of the man's life?

Unlikely. This nitpicking isn't worth much.

I know I've seen this before somewhere and I'm sure its not just deja vu.

I don't think it really matters what they put in the dictionary as the difinition of anime. Really, how many people are going to go to a dictionary to decide if they want to watch anime or not or to find out what anime is? It's one of those things where it doesn't matter what real definition is because it's the connotative meaning that is important and what people pay attention to.

I think the point he's trying to get across is that it is in a dictionary and that some over zealous soccer mom or christian or someone of any belief that has a pull that's against anime might actually use that as back-up to show that anime is "the devil." This probably isn't the intention of the dictionary, but with people jumping on everything like a pack of hounds on a slab of meat these days it's reasonable to see why someone, even someone such as him, would be somewhat concerned. As I mentioned before, if we could provide them with a better, more general definition of anime there would be that much less flak for the anti-anime groups to throw at us anime supporters. Let's face it, more people are going to believe in a preacher with a dictionary in one hand and a bible in the other than an anime fan saying that the preacher is wrong.

However, anime has been in abundance in this country for going on twenty-five to thirty years with every sign of GROWING in abundance and acceptance, as opposed to shrinking.

To suggest that a dictionary definition (that's been in the dictionary quite a while, this isn't a revision) is going to bring the downfall of a decades old multi-million dollar industry is ludicrous.

I mean, honestly, how successful has the religious right been in stopping pornography? In reality, the only thing that's hurting the pornography industry right now is the abundance of ">[SPAM] on the internet......

Wait a second.......

Oh, I'm not neccessarily saying that it will cause the end of anime as we know it, but there's a greater possibility that people who don't know of anime would get the wrong ideas or that over-protective parents would get even more so about anime. This won't have any affect on the existing anime fadom, but could decrease, if only slightly, the possibility of someone else becoming a fan because of mere skepticism. It's basically the same with GTA, people who have played it and still want to play it aren't affected as much as those who haven't played it or who wanted to play it but no longer want to because of the controversy of the game. As the dictionary defines anime (in that edition) it's more likely that someone who is curious about just what the word means would get the wrong ideas, or affirm their beliefs that all anime is violent porn that needs to be destroyed than if a more general definition was provided. It's enough that some people already think that about anime, we don't need a dictionary wrongfully defining it as such (and I say wrongfully because of the word define, when you define something, that's saying everything that falls into that category is like that, meaning the dictionary defines all anime as being violent, futuristic, and sexual, which, unless you believe in that professor, cleary isn't very descriptive of one of Miyazaki-sensei's works).

Did you not read his entire post? He already answered you here:

Both Hello Kitty and Digi Charat are series made solely to promote and act as merchandise for brands/stores. That's their entire purpose. They didn't change anything in Anime, they simply generated profits, and made some fanbases. Every title Craeyst listed has had, in some way, significant impact in either the US or Japanese markets (and beyond).

And as much as I love Di Gi Charat, the fact that it's just a commercial for Gamers is 100% true.

I think it needs to say: "...and may include violence and sex." Also, all anime is not futuristic, so these people have been in the dark the whole time they were making their dictionary.

Keep in mind that the people who are in charge of putting new words into the dictionary have probably never seen anime. They compile definitions based on various stuff and direct knowledge isn't necessarily one of them. The dictionary is compiled and altered based on the popular usage of terms and, quite frankly, that definition is probably pretty accurate in how people outside the anime fandom (i.e. a lot more than those of us in it) use the term or understand it.

Thats the problem! We don't want to give a soccer mom or overly religious person the wrong idea about anime. Then they'll go and tell everyone that anime is the devil, and if it says that in the dictionary people will believe them. If an anime fan tells them not all anime is like that they are much more likely to believe what the dictionary says. Crying or Very sad

So? What are you gonna do? Sue Houghton Mifflin, or host an online petition? Neither will work.

In fact, the only thing you can do is stop whining and be more mature. If you keep behaving like this then you will be the worst example of anime fans.

If a person wants to decide anime is the devil, they'll be able to do it without a few lines in a dictonary.

Hey, here's a good example- anyone notice the line in the new guyver-related banner right here on ANN? "The New Face of Ultraviolence is Here." Futuristic settings, violence, and sex are common (and loved) themes in anime. For a person who is so completely new to the genre that they'd have to look the word up, it's a good starting point.

Yes, it's not a 100% accurate definiton. Yes, there are major influential anime out there that do not have those 3 traits- the ones you mentioned were just terrible choices. Let's go with Fruits Basket, Kodocha, Sailor Moon, and KareKano instead. Here's the kicker- who jumps headlong into anime expecting a ton of Fruba-like shows, and being shocked if they come across a show were someone bleeds? I've never met anybody like that.

The fight to combat the various stereotypes that make people think anime fans are twisted, bad folk will continue no matter what, becuase there are shows out there to match said stereotypes. Trying to go up-in-arms over a few lines in a dictonary just makes us look worse, as you said. Fix it on a person-by-person basis. I'm sure I've changed a few minds on anime... (nothing like seeing the look on a grandmother's face when they find out the nice girl from the craft store watches 'those weird cartoons juinor likes' too. You can just tell they're thinking twice about it. Very Happy )
