My daughter saw her older cousin reading manga and now wants one for her birthday. I have no idea what manga is-- besides being a book. And If I do get a manga for her, it needs to be appropriate for her age. My niece told me about the book she was reading-- and I definitly wouldn't call that appropriate for a 8 year old. Can someone help me out? Thanks!

Um, first you have to tell us your residence / major language, as well as any genre your daughter would like, plus any specific content you don't want her to see. I assume you living in the US / North America, so the availability should be limited to NA English releases. Not many shoujo manga for pre-teens are licensed in US, though.

A good start would be looking through licensed titles RECENTLY serialized in Ciao, Ribon, and Nakayoshi. I emphasized "RECENTLY" because they once had more mature (late teen)-oriented titles, but recently many of those manga-ka have moved to other magazines of the same publisher targeted at older readers e.g. Sho-Comi, Cookie, and Bessatsu Friend, respectively.

Second, I'm not sure if a recommendation thread is allowed here at the manga forum. Judging from the lower traffic at manga forum and the specificity of your question I'd say it's possible to acquire a "special permit" by mods, but they are who make the final decision.

For basic information on what manga is, your first stop is Wikipedia.

Since you don't have a location listed, I'll assume you live in America. Most manga that have been released overseas have content that would be more sutiable for teenagers, so you may have difficulty finding suitable books for your daughter. Similar to video games, manga have age rating printed on the back that range from "All Ages" to "Mature." I would highly recommend not purchasing anything for your daughter with an age rating higher than 13+. Take note that even some books rated All Ages may still contain possibly problematic material. For example, although Card Captor Sakura: Master of the Clow is labeled All Ages there are multiple homosexual relationships and a romance involving an adult teacher and a fourth-grade student. Here are some recommendations for books that are devoid almost entirely of possibly objectionable material:

A Little Snow Fairy Sugar, rated All Ages
Although I've only seen the television series, there shouldn't be anything inappropriate beyond a few totally innocent bubble bath scenes. It's very cute, and I'd highly recommend it to a child of any age.

Tokyo Mew Mew and Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode, rated 10+
If your daughter is also an anime fan, she may have seen the TV show spin-off, Mew Mew Power, on 4Kids TV. It's a staple of "Magical Girl" series such as Mew Mew to have transformation sequences that involve undetailed Barbie-doll nudity when the characters "suit up," but there's nothing else in it that could possibly be deemed offensive.

Can you tell us the name of the series that your niece was reading or what specifically you felt was innappropriate? Also, what do you personally feel is appropriate reading material for an 8-year-old girl?

Wolverine Princess has already suggested several excellent titles, the top choice based on being cute and devoid of objectionable material being A Little Snow Fairy Sugar. This series, which also has a very sweet anime series (i.e. an animated series) adaption, is a very child-friendly one and can even be enjoyed by an adult.

Thank you for taking an active role in your daughter's life and interests. The world needs more good parents.

I WOULD say Yu-GI-Oh! but the manga's anything but child friendly.

Maybe Chikyu Misaki. Despite a few nudie scenes, it's a really cute story so your daughter might like it. Ichigo Mashimaro might be a good choice too. The first two volumes are already out and the second one came out a few days ago where I live.

That's all i can think of that aren't shonen.

Kamichama Karin and Di Gi Charat: Funny and cute, kid-friendly stuff
Angelic Layer: Some say a cross between pokemon and angels, it's a good manga with a good storyline
Ultra Maniac: A witch comes to a public school and makes a best friend and tries to help her with love problems. It's a cute, semi-magical girl comedy.

I hope that helps!

My hunch is that this is yet another spam bot topic. Forgive me if I'm judging wrongly but the facts add up:

-In most spam bot cases, the so-called user makes only one post and usually the post is made the join date. (Not active since join date.)

This seems to be the same case. Besides, I'm pretty sure the person would have hopped back into this topic and thanked or recognized some replies. Sorry but this is just a gut feeling that this user does not exist...

Thanks everyone for the ideas- I will check them out.

And Gage-- I'm sorry but I'm a mother to 4 children ages 15,13,11, and 8. And I have to cook dinner, clean the house, make sure the kids do their homework, ect AND go to work everyday. Being a mother is hard work and I don't have the time to go on the computer whenever I please and for however long I want.

Kingdom Heart would probably be the best choice for someone that young. It's very kid-friendly.

In the back of each manga, you should see a rating: All ages, Youth (10 and older) Teen, Older Teen, etc. It is best if you actually read through the material first and decide for yourself before giving it to someone at 8 year old. And definitely ignore dormcat, shonenbat, and gage's post. Those would likely confuse you more than actually help you if you are new to manga.

And you find this list helpful.
Tokyopop's all-age manga
Hope this helps.

This is a difficult one, after a lot of thought about this I could only come up with one recommendation, Hikaru no go published by Viz, it is rated A for all ages although it has some stuff that I don't think might be 100% suitable for 8 year olds, like for example on vol. 7 when Fujiwara-no-Sai (HIkaru's spiritual guide) gives him some explanation in relation to fear and GO (board game), and is illustrated as a battle with swords (nothing extreme or gory at all) but he is holding a sword to his face I don't know if I'd want to have my 8 year old seeing stuff like that yet, even though this kind of events don't happen very often I don't think.

Just so people wouldn't think I was a jerk, which admittedly I was, I sent this to TearsOfTheUnsolvedHeart and I've decided to post it on the forum:

I'm sorry for that post, really. Wow, you do seem very busy but you've come to the right place if you want anime and manga information!

The reason I thought that post was made by a spam bot is because in the past week there have been cases of spam bots spamming the Anime and Manga Forum sections and do post some comments looking like your story.

Sorry, again and I do have some recommendations for you.

To give you a bit of insight, manga is basically a "comic" relating to us Americans. [I do point to the Encyclopedia section on the left on the Navigation Bar.

Unfortunately, it is hard to recommend manga titles for your child because series have become more enhanced, if you will, and most series will contain eathier sexual material or violence. Very rarely will you ever find a peaceful or pure series suitable for his age group. - Most titles you were recommended too in the forum would be totally inpossible for your son to understand not only for his age but the series have been airing for years, basically. You were told to check out Yu-Gi-Oh if I recall but the series have been airing since about 2001-2002 and since then, new seasons of the show have come and gone thus basically leaving him with not identifying characters.

To be honest, I would wait a LITTLE while before exposing him too alot of manga because you'll find it violent, trust me! I'm sure we both can agree on the violence and sexual material in the media world is a bit extreme and it's what the fans are pushing for demand now uh days. - Stick to the cartoons, literally. There is 1 thing I agree with is Kingdom Hearts. Go along the lines of that for now and Disney movies in general. (Closer to the anime world for his age anyway!)

Sure you can do whatever you want but all that up there was my thoughts on the matter.
**********************
I would also suggest that you give this sites URL, or link (www.animenewsnetwork.com) to your other son whos 15 if he is interested in this type of field of course. Warn you that most people around here can be a bit pushy but it all benefits you in the end! A sort of tough love if you will.

Overall, I hope you understood everything. Heck, I'm 15 and I tend to lack in detailing some thoughts so please understand. :-p

Take care and I hope to see you around the forums in the future!

-Gage LaMay

Yes Kingdom Hearts is probably a good choice.

Thank you everyone for all the ideas! I've come up with a short list of maybe? manga:
B.B. Explosion
Ultra Maniac
The First King Adventure
A Little Snow Fairy Sugar
Kingdom Hearts

I think when I decide on the most appropriate one I will go to the book store and read it first- like someone suggested.

Thanks again everyone for your ideas, hospitality, and kindness. This has been a lot easier than I thought it would to find suitable manga. Thank you!

Oh- and thanks again for your reply Gage.

Well, this certainly isn't something you see that often...

Anyway, in spite of all the replies, no one has yet to mention Yotsuba&!? Shameful, I tell you.

Yotusba&!

An absolutely delightful manga devoid of little to no risqué content. It is genuinely funny without being over the top, with its material being able to be absorbed by anyone ranging from a child to an adult. Only a heartless person could not at the very least somewhat enjoy this title. I mean, this is a favorite even for a jaded teenager like myself who is much more interested in reading a gritty, mature story. You might even grow fond of yourself since you mentioned that you'd read the different manga before buying them for your eight year old.

Currently there are three separate volumes out for ten dollars each with future ones planned for release next year, so it's not too much of a hit to someone's wallet.

I would also recommend a manga by the same creator, Azumanga Daioh, but that one is not as kid safe per se as Yotsuba&!. Depending on your own standards, I'd say look into it to see if it would pass the limits or not.
