Every season for the past long while there's been at least a couple of anime every season in a similar vein to K-ON! and Azumanga Daioh in which the characters sit around and talk (typically a group of girls though there are a few about a group of boys such as Kimi to Boku) is there a name for this genre yet? Is there enough shows out for it to be classified as a genre? I've seen people call them "moe" shows is that the name of the genre? But people all seem to have different ideas about what moe is and it seems more like an aspect of a series rather than an actual genre. I've also seen people use the word "slice-of-life" is that the name of the genre? It doesn't seem from my experience like people have settled on a name for it yet... So what I'm wondering is is there a name for this genre yet? If so what is it called?

Perhaps Moe Slice of Life, a combined genre who's name implies that everyday stuff happens for the point of seeing cute things. Although this may not apply to all the shows you are referring to.

I'd call them Cugdoct shows: which could either be, Cute Girls Doing Cute Things or Cute Guys Doing Cute Things.

Cugdoct works for me. (Or Cragdoct for "Crazy girls...")
"Slice of Life" is something entirely else (Whisper of the Heart would be closer), so I usually refer to comic-strip girls-talking shows as "Azumanga Daioh shows", but in Lucky Star's and Going-Home Club's cases, that's FAR too undeserved a compliment.

If you consider something like Aria, I'd call that slice of life.
Things like K-On aren't quite like that since the point of the show is the cute rather than the life. So I'd call them Cute Girls Doing Cute Things. Well, assuming it's girls. Otherwise it'd be guys or animals or whatever.
If it's based on a 4-komma and is filmed as such I'd call it a gag comedy.

I just refer to them as school life comedies.

Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh are definitely similar in style and tone (a variety of cute/moe girls discussing arbitrary, everyday things), but AD has at least some structured storyline elements and a wider ranging main/supporting cast, whereas LS has way more of a random vignette format and focuses primarily on the core four girls (up until the very end of the series, at least). I like to think of Azumanga Daioh as Lucky Star and School Rumble's love child; all of which are three of my favorite school life comedies (and overall series as well).

@The Mad Manga Massacre:
In my opinion the shows that you are talking about do not have the distinct distinguishing characteristics that would be needed for a genre.
All of those shows fit in existing genres, typically slice of life and comedy but possibly others.
If you want to label them as "cute girls doing cute things" or some variation of that then it should be a theme and not a genre. That is what "moe" is now.

Although I'm sure you will get people who will bitch about moe even being classified as a theme.

That's because moe is neither a theme nor a genre...
