I just saw Hajime no Ippo and wondered if there are any other sports anime out there as good.

Princess Nine is supposed to be really good... but I've never seen it. I don't much care for the genre, frankly....

Slam Dunk is a very good basketball series. Pretty long and not in the US (execpt for the manga).

I didn't like sports anime at all until I saw Princess Nine, but it wasn't all about baseball, it was very plot driven, and it had great charachters.

Most good sports anime is related to the characters specfically. The sport helps to drive the plot, but the charcters, stories and relationships found inside make the series what it is.

Now while Tempest (IIRC) may disagree with my take that Initial D and Hikaru no Go belong under the sports category, they carry the elements that are necessary. In fact, they heavily rely on the competition between either a team or an individual in order to attain a higher purpose, goal, revelation, etc. As such, they belong under the sports genre and are equally deserving to be in there. Otherwise you may just as well be rid of the "sports" genre altogether and place Slam Dunk into an "action" anime series even though most individuals watching it would feel that it doesn't really belong there.

And if we want to look at some dictionary definitions, it becomes easier (depending on the definitions used) to incorporate games into the sports genre.

Since they do have the elements, here is a list of things you might watch under the sports genre that I've actually seen:

Hajime no Ippo (which I know the first individual watched)
Yawara
Touch
Hikaru no Go
Initial D
Slam Dunk
Princess Nine

Much in the same way Eva uses its battles as a medium for character development. Pertaining to the topic, I read some of Slam Dunk manga and enjoyed it. Haven't gotten around to Princess Nine though...

Prince of Tennis. I never knew before I watched this just how exciting tennis is.

... then I go play tennis and I find it boring again.

Not an anime per say, but try and read Harlem Beat. Better than Slam Dunk in my mind.

I've seen both Slam Dunk and Dear Boys, which came out early this year. I think Dear Boys is far better than Slam Dunk. Very Happy

I have to agree with Godaistudios, Initial D is awesome, especially if you are into the whole import racing thing.
