^ Mindblowing twist.
By the way, am I the only one who thought the bartender looks like Ginko from Mushishi? It's so weird making comparisons between the two just as curiosity And I also saw Jojo's ep and I'm more with Nick's review, it was alright but let's see how it goes, although the whole tone of the openings, endings and even some part in the episode was very... suggestive let's say. I don't know anything about the manga or what happens later so I'll instead keep making thoughts in my brain. |

I'm really glad to hear that Death Parade is hitting it out of the park, because I loved the Death Billiards short that came out last year.

I agree with the people that were a little less enthused with Death Parade. The animation was gorgeous, but I didn't find myself very engaged with the couple. I'm guessing ultimately my enjoyment of the show will be determined based on how much I like the main cast, but I'm curious about them, so I'm giving it the 'ol 3-episode try.

That was one of my first thoughts. Given how this series could have a similar episodic structure like Mushishi, it makes for a happy coincidence. |

Man, Funimation is going all out to jump on board and try to compete with Crunchyroll. I wish they'd update their quality first, though. Or at least get shows not at the top my to-watch list.
Speakin of which, Assassination Classroom was pretty good. The art direcion is especially good and I always enjoy that thick lines style. I wonder if we'll ever get another truly long shounen anime though. 22 episodes is a bit disappointing, and I hope we get another Conan or Naruto some day. I'm not including Youkai Watch because it's not based on a manga series.
That's nothing new if you're into video games. The past year has been filled with nothing but straight white men dictating what constitutes proper minority representation and depiction and dismissing ones they don't personally approve it. I guess being a straight white men give them clairvoyant authority on such subjects, or something like that.
I actually see it quite a number of times. If we're limiting it to just present company, I remember JesuOtaku saying that about Ikkitousen.
What's the difference, if I may ask? The show's allegory line of "She was asking for it, being on her own like that..." and scenes like two girls giving a simulated oral sex on flower positioned in a way to make it look like another girl's penis makes it seem rife with "creepy' and "voyeuristic" fanservice. I mean, I loved it, but I can think of plenty of other yuri anime isn't anywhere near as explicit or exploitative. |

Uh uh. I mean, first of all, that's not what I said, and unlike you, I have actual sources to prove it, but before that: No, you never see a female reaction to male-oriented shows on the level that you see the reverse. Average derogatory female otaku response to fanservice show for men (that we are assuming is well-animated or produced so that won't come up as part of the argument): "That's gross and I'm not watching it because I find it upsetting." I'll throw you a bone and admit that "Guys who watch that stuff are gross and I wouldn't want to be around them" enters that conversation sometimes too, but as I'll clarify below: you sure aren't seeing any of that in this thread, so it can't be that common! Average derogatory male otaku response to fanservice show for women (that we are assuming is well-animated or produced so that won't come up as part of the argument): "That's crappy and if women were smart or had any taste they wouldn't even like it because (x, y, z)" Ask any woman on the internet who works in opinion, and they'll swear to you up and down that they get this reaction startlingly often when they state their feelings on just about anything, whereas men are not told "well you don't really think this, or shouldn't, because you're just confused about what this really is." Do you see a slough of women in here telling you that you're bad or mistaken for rating or enjoying Testament or Saekano a certain way? No, you sure don't. I see a lot of the opposite, though! In regards to the Ikki Tousen thing, you could only be referring to one of two things: one is an old review I did, mostly played for humor and hyperbole, where at some point I said "This isn't even good fanservice" on the basis of production quality, as in the animation looks like shit. That video is five years old, so I'm sure some of the internet-persona snark or specific phrasing might not be something I'd stand behind now, but it definitely wasn't a review telling men "what was okay for them to like." The other thing you could potentially be referring to is this much shorter video exploring the female empowerment angle of Ikki Tousen and why the sexualization of it isn't inherently better just because the women are empowered, and also talking about different types of fanservice and sexism in general. Either way, you probably shouldn't go slinging around hearsay without a source when the person you're talking about is engaging with you directly. Come on, dude. Be cool. |

Despite my favorites not showing up (except for the magazine cameo with Aiko), the anime is turning out to be pretty good although it has pacing issues and needs to speed it up a bit if it's not over 22 episodes long. Also, Mio being revealed too late wasn't great at all. The Producer is too scary, like a rapist or a current or former yakuza enforcer and is very stiff making his intimidating looks even more intimidating. I want a split cour or 22+ episodes so they can squeeze in some of my favorites in as supporting roles. Uzuki's cheerfulness is very forced but enjoyable but this episode still hasn't redeemed Rin of her blandness though.

Well the man did realize in the end that that is impossible with only seven darts, and thus you have to take darts away from your opponent. |

Assassination Classroom: Oh god, that was great. Even if it was mostly exposition, it was still great. I've been following the manga for a while, and I was really unsure after watching the OVA (it was pretty average), but... it was great. They totally nailed it.
Stardust Crusaders Battle in Egypt: More Jojo, more fun. It'll keep the monster of the week format, but I'm ok with that. The new stand users are actually better than those of the last season. Also Iggy. Iggy is best. I suppose the only thing I'd like to comment on is the opening. I really like the atmosphere it has, and it works well with the fact that they are getting closer and closer to DIO. |

Maybe when Naruto finishes, and then we'll get a slot with similar demographics as Naruto. Then again, this didn't happen when Bleach's anime finished. |

I caught it simply by listening to the rules Decim laid out -- if you only have seven darts and a perfect bullseye is only 50 points, you can't score more than 350. But later in the episode, Decim mentioned that if you throw at your opponents board, you'll score for them, which means if one of the players had been selfless, they could've helped the other person win. That would actually make a good test to see if someone deserves to go to heaven, but since neither of them passed, one got reincarnated and the other went to oblivion. |

Not quite true; for some unfathomable reason, the best spot on a standard dartboard is not the bullseye, but the triple-20 (the top segment of the circle half the radius of the whole board). Still impossible, of course, since the highest score possible with 7 darts is 420. Death Parade's using the "take random people you don't know and place them in life-or-death situation to make their dark secrets not seem like something you've seen a million times" school of drama. spoiler[I only care about me! Wait no I care about you but only because you're carrying my baby! WTF you cheated I'ma kill you! Ugh...] I'm so tired of this sort of thing in American media (almost every cop show or mystery show or medical drama or what-have-you) that I can't take this seriously. But apparently it never gets old for most people. |

I liked the Death Billiards short until the "we forgot how to end this" conclusion. Hope the TV series improves on that.

Death Parade might be that surprise that I was hoping for. I wasn't even aware that it existed and I never saw Death Billiards, but as described, I think that I'd like it. The reviews give the impression that it's exactly the sort of thing that I'd enjoy. The premise also seems as though it could be hard to sustain, but while worrying, it also makes me curious to see if they'll find clever ways to stretch, go around or refresh it.
And of course FUNImation has the damned show. You know, if I had known that they'd be gobbling all of the best stuff up like this, I might have reconsidered renewing my CrunchyRoll subscription last month... Incidentally, to me, this demonstrates the value of the preview guide. Some people obsessively rail against negative reviews, but I have long held those to be almost incidental to the positive reviews, which have several times drawn my attention to something that I might have otherwise not even noticed. That raising of awareness is why I still value critics.
This captures the heart of my feelings. Even though I'm a heterosexual (maybe, I guess?) male, a lot of sexual fanservice ostensibly for my enjoyment deters me. The elements that I have the strongest distaste for seem to have in common somehow depriving the female characters of agency. Scenarios in which a female character is in pain, distressed, humiliated or portrayed as oblivious to sexuality as she is made its subject simultaneously do not appeal to me and invoke real world problems of sexual exploitation or misogyny. By contrast, when the sexuality is genuinely motivated by the female character's desire and action, it can be quite appealing, even if it's trashy. It becomes very frustrating when rhetoric rejects carefully drawing lines about attitudes toward sexual fanservice in favor of a disingenuous, reduction of it to a binary opposition. The bizarre grotesques of the human form and behavior of breasts deters me a lot too. I'm sure that I could fit that under the rubric of denying agency, but it's probably unnecessary to overthink what amounts to, "water balloon tits on an oiled-up snake are gross." Part of what I like about older anime is that even if the portrayals are unpleasantly exploitative, it's relieving to see female characters that bear a less incidental resemblance to real women. |
